I enjoyed this book. I admit, I’m a big fan of the movie it’s based on and did find this book to be one of those rare instances where the film is better - hence the rating given.

It was an interesting look at so many different topics. I do feel like it went in depth on some things and brushed over others.

All in all, a quick, enjoyable read. Not hugely moving or earth shattering but considering I bought it in a charity shop, enjoyable enough.

hmm, this was fine. it was a bit disjointed in its flow and characters came and went without being developed well. it was quite different from the film but overall, i actually think the movie was better than the book. SAY WHAT??

TBR update:

HA! i just watched 'the best exotic marigodl hotel' and had no idea the film was based upon this book. clearly i have been under a rock. i caught the 'based on the novel...' at the end of the movie so now i really want to read this - though i am aware there are significant differences between the two.

Beautiful! Written in a very down to earth with a certain cheek style, this novel delves into the essence of our humanity, our restless search for the meaning of life and happiness.

The novel casts lively characters that burrow under your skin without your realising it and two countries: Britain and India take prominent roles in this colourful tapestry woven with skill for the sheer joy of the reader.

This is the first book I've read from the author and I really had a ball. I look forward to reading more from her.

I have a rule where if I watch a film based on a book I have to read the book. I’m now rethinking this policy...

The film was OK - it made the characters quite personable - but the book is awful. It’s full of unlikeable, racist characters that nobody could possibly relate to, nor want to invest time in, and I wish I hadn’t bothered to finish it.

I must say I haven't watched the movie (although now I intend to, just to see the difference with the book) so I didn't exactly know what to expect from this book. At the beginning I was not convinced, but the more I read the more I was captured by the atmosphere.
Overall a pleasant and light read, which shows the perspective of seventy-something-years-old people who are still managing to have adventures and change their lifes.

*low three stars*

There was something so nice and wholesome about seeing the development of these old people’s lives....they still had so much more to experience. It was an interesting setting - i don’t think I’ve read many books set in India which I really appreciated and enjoyed. However, it was a slow book to get into and I am in a bit of reading slump so it took me just under a month to read which is a little crazy (though I did read Midnight Sun in between.)

Very fast read. I wanted to read the novel before I watched the movie.

Not what I was expecting it to be. An okay book, but I'd recommend watching the film (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) instead.
