***3.5 stars*** Poignant and touching story about the choices we make in life and the important crossroads that we don’t necessarily recognize when they are happening. I enjoyed the examination of the main character’s relationship with her father and with her best friend. However, the main character is so passive and bland even when she’s going back in time over and over and getting to be “wild”; I wish her character had a little more depth.
I just loved the first 70 pages. Lots of NYC scenes, which makes my review biased. Time travel got a little excessive towards the end, but I really enjoyed this read.
This book came about as a much needed break from my current Tolkien reading and it was the one of the few English books at the hostel, so here we go!
While a little more sci-fi/time travel esque than my normal reads, this was an interesting book. The actual time travel didn’t really make any sense, but I suppose it never really does. It’s mainly explores the father daughter relationship of Leonard and Alice, which was endearing. Straub offers some commentary on familial structure, friendship and our roles. Tears were shed, but it’s back on the bookshelf

Emma Straub captures the reality of grief and the complexities of family in such a beautiful way - I couldn't put it down.
This is an experience everybody goes through - losing someone and wondering if you have done enough, said enough, left things where you want to leave them, etc. Even though this is a story that has been told time and time again, Straub clearly poured her heart and soul into these characters, and it made the time old tale of grief and family feel completely new.
The time travel element is one of my favorite plot devices in fiction, and this particular novel felt like a welcome extension of About Time. There are many complaints about the ageless feline deity, Ursula, but I think any cat owner knows that a cat with no interest in dying, will live forever. I felt like Ursula's eternal youth was just as believable as time travel itself, so I didn't find it distracting.
There are so many things I loved about this book - I could go on and on and on. It is for sure one of my favorite reads of the year, and I know that I will pick it up over and over again.

De vriend die me dit boek aanraadde, schreef: “This book blends life and fiction in an amazingly moving way. Thank you, Emma Straub!” en hij heeft gelijk.
Net het boek dat ik zocht: luchtig maar niet te licht, vlot, grappig, gelaagd, goed gecomponeerd, over het leven en literatuur dus, vaders en dochters, keuzes en de obligate beperkingen ervan, met genoeg bedenkingen die je doen afdwalen en voldoende troost om weer terug te keren.
Thank you, Emma Straub!

It’s not that this book is a five star book, but I feel like the message of the book is five stars for anyone who’s dealt with a loss of a close loved one. I’d tried to read this but it worked for me better with an audiobook. Straub’s message at the end is touching too.
A sweet and genuine riff on the time travel trope. This is like a warm hug of a book.
