Star Wars: Darth Vader volume 3 - The Shu-Torun War

Writer: Kieron Gillen
Artist: Leinil Yu (annual), Salvador Larroca (issues 16-19)

An Empire at war. Royalty and barons. Traditions and dancing. A multitude of well written characters all with their own motivations.

Shu-Torun is a planet with a rich mining tradition that has made it rich and rebellious.
Set in the time between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, the Empire is hurting after the destruction of the Death Star. Darth Vader is being used as a troubleshooter, quashing rebellions and uprisings.
He also has his own agenda & Palpatine still doesn't fully trust him. There are machinations and schemes within schemes.

The Annual acts as a prequel to the four issues dealing with the war itself.
Yu's artwork is fantastic in the annual. It's dramatic and depicts the expanse of the action so well. While different to Larroca's slick pencil work it isn't a jarring change and helps to establish the prequel as slightly separate and a lead in to the main story.

Vader has installed a new Queen on Shu-Torun and the ore barons aren't happy. They will defy Vader at their own peril.
And don't make the mistake of asking Vader to dance at your ball. You won't like the results 😬.

Gillen's writing is so on point with this series. Great characterisation and the murderous droids Triple Zero and BeeTee One are hilarious in their over zealous approach to helping destroy human enemies.

The young queen turns out to learn the ruthlessness needed to rule very quickly and isn't the weak figurehead she could have been.

Battles, droids, storm troopers, lightsaber wielding twins, and a lethal environment where scenes remind me of the end of Anakin and the birth of Vader in Revenge of the Sith.
An extra issue or two to expand on some characters or action and it would have been perfect.

Vader volume 3 jumps around a bit, as Aphra has been captured by the rebels, meaning I have clue what happened with that as I started with Vader and I'm volume 1 of Star Wars the comic instead of volume three. So I'm all kinds of confused with that. However I don't need to know just yet.

Instead Vader has been sent to win a war on Shu-Torun for the empire. There he faces the court as it rebels. He places Princess Trios as the new ruler. I love her. She reminds me of Daenerys, who was never supposed to rule, was supposed to be useful and then be discarded, and rises to the challenge of ruler. I enjoyed watching her understand and then rising to stand beside Vader, lord of evil, absolute greatest villain ever. And she doesn't look weak next to him by the end. She looks like whether it'll be the Empire or the Republic ruling she won't be cowed and can handle whatever is thrown her way.

It also was made very clear that Vader misses his droids. He puts up with Beetee and Triple Zero bickering just like C3PO and R2D2, and deliberately disobeying him so he can win. It's hilarious. I love it. Vader gets so annoyed at 000 and doesn't do a thing to him. Just like he didn't do a thing to R2 when he was being a smartass.

Vader continues to impress. Totally a 5/5 stars. Can't wait for the next volume!

Whatever you do never ask Vader to dance.

This comic series is set between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. In this set, Vader has been tasked to bring down a rebellion in Shu-Torun. He has made Trios queen. For now, Vader will have to put aside his need to find the young Skywalker and focus the task at hand. With the twins and the evil counterparts to C-3PO and R2D2 in tow, Vader must prove himself to the Emperor but it won't be easy as espionage and double-crossing are added into the mix!

Although I have loved this series, I felt this series did little to push forth. I suppose with the writers having to insure that it stays in-canon, you really don't have much to do with Vader except send him out to squash a rebellion, install a queen, and search for Aphra, who is currently MIA. Still Vader continues to remain one of the most badass villains to ever grace the screen and comic book pages. I have relatively enjoyed this series and though I am not a fan of this one, I remain loyal to his series.
