That slayed a bit TOO hard. I do not read comics so I was defs confused at the start. Had to read this for my literature class but was pleasantly surprised, ended on a cliff hanger so kinda wanna buy the second volume.

Fierce, thoughtful and sarcastic, what's not to love? Graphic on every level, but a refreshing woman focused comic that I found very enjoyable. The ad space pages at the end of every issue are a bonus delight that should not be skipped. Immediately started reading Book 2, which gets even better, with more focus on the character's backstories.

This wasn’t what I expected, though I’m not sure what that was, and I was pleasantly surprised. I love the fake(?) ads between issues, and the vibe in general. That cliff-hanger too. I’ll definitely wanna track down book two.

Bitch Planet is a world run by The Fathers where women who don’t conform to their rigorous standards are labeled ‘non-compliant’ and sent off-planet to prison. But it is so much more than that. It’s the best of women in prison exploitation films, combine them with science fiction set in a dystopian future and add a heavy dose of feminism written in a powerful and careful voice by DeConnick. The plot constantly twists and turns to reveal new complexities at each page while de Landro’s art is inspired. All the women of Bitch Planet are written and drawn as unique individuals, none more so than Penny Rolle, who loves who she is just as she is, thank you and is willing to fight to be who she is. There is intentionally nothing subtle about this series. It is purposely loud, angry and in your face in all the right ways. A must have in your collection for all the non-compliant patrons in your community.

The first two ("Extraordinary Machine" & "President Bitch") contain a long-arc story about the dystopian future where women who are "noncompliant" are shipped to a prison planet, and the third is an anthology of short stories set in the same universe with guest writers and illustrators.
I LOVED this series and will be watching as more are published. It's strongly and unapologetically feminist, featuring many main characters who are black, Asian and Latinx, with my favorite being the very large black prisoner named Penny. I was SO happy that a story line in the second volume was strongly supportive of trans women and pointed out that attempts to turn cis-women against trans women are a way of dividing and conquering. I also liked the spoof ads in each issue that exhort women to buy the products to make their vaginas and personalities more acceptable to men.
I don't want to give too many spoilers away, but if the idea of a feminist comic with sly humor and centered strongly on the experience of WOC appeals to you, get yourself a copy now!
