this is the most disjointed series finale i have ever had the displeasure of reading. it rendered the second book almost entirely obsolete and introduced so many new and random plot points that didn’t matter and which were, ultimately, completely unrelated to whatever the fuck the main storyline was supposed to be. the worldbuilding is trash, which was fine when carry on was just a silly, whimsical stand-alone that didn’t take itself too seriously—but if you’re going to write an entire fantasy trilogy and MARKET IT AS SUCH you need to make the bare minimum effort to i don’t know CREATE A FANTASY WORLD?????

it’s SO CLEAR that the latter two books in this trilogy were poorly planned cash grabs exploiting the disappointed harry potter fans looking for a way to engage with a similar story without supporting jk rowling. i’ve read literal drarry fics better than this.

the one star is for baz and baz ONLY.

I saw this on twitter and just said oh my fuck!! hell yeah BOOK 3

Okay!!!! It was almost perfect!! I have so many emotions but I have to go to work so I’ll write a real review after.

Biggest issue is that Rowell uses the word s*bags twice and you really think people would know better at this point.

Content wise? It was a sappy, happy mess and I cried

Okay real review time!

I loved this. I am at heart a person who loves stories about people. Don’t get me wrong, plot is important, but I love character based stories. I love stories about intimacy and romance. This was exactly that.

This book explores Simon and Baz moving forward together after trauma. The book doesn’t immediately jump into everything is fine. Simon isn’t used to love, he’s not used to stability. Baz is not used to be treated delicately. The two characters get to figure out how to face these personal fears together. They talk, they learn how to cohabitate, they stumble through their intimacy for the first time together.

There is one particular scene where Simon is breaking down to Baz and he’s comforting him because he’s panicking that just immediately won me over. It was so tender and just about them. It wasn’t about the outside world, it was learning to exist as people together. It was about realizing that relationships take effort but the fear (Simon had never experienced real love from anyone) of trusting another person can be worked through, and that it will eventually get easier.

I am also very happy that panic attacks and ptsd were treated with care and not as a plot device. It was simply a part of Simon’s life and Baz was there for him.

I am, very obviously a sucker for romance, especially when I am invested. I loved that we did get some sex even if it was standard YA sexual content. There were a few lines though that made me be like “oh dang” and yes I’m referring to when Simon said he wanted to come on Baz. Thank goodness for fanfic for the perverts out there - not that that could ever be me!

Everyone else in this series had a fantastic role in the book too. I think having Penelope away from Simon was so important! I had read an interview with Rowell where she says it’s deliberate, so that the sidekick can learn who she is on her own and I think it it was effective. I loved her relationship with Shepard and her resourcefulness being used for her own advantage and not just to help out Simon.

I was so pleasantly surprised by the introduction of Niamh!! A butch lesbian(?) Magical veterinarian? I was thrilled!! And I loved Agatha in this book. She showed real development as a character and then her and Niamh’s developing relationship was so nice. I could feel it being worked up to and was happy it was done so well.

I loved Lady Salisbury. I knew she was Simon’s grandmother but the reveal with the sword at the end was still so sweet. I was so happy he got to have a family, a blood family.

The plot was fun! I enjoyed the evil cult leader Smith-Smith. I liked the examination of the chosen one once again.

I liked that Simon realized he killed his own father and was going to be okay. The whole way trauma was handled was well done.

I thought the whole Shepard being engaged to a demon was hilarious. The entire curse being a marriage contract was so light hearted and unexpected. I laughed out loud too when Shepard told Penelope he had a mermaid STI.

I loved the ending, it was very hopeful. I loved the little descriptions of Simon and Baz, like when Lady Salisbury notices they’re holding hands right away and is pleased. It’s the little details about love that make a story for me!

I started reading this series right around the time I was diagnosed with PTSD. I saw so much of myself in Simon in the second book and the way he responds to trauma. I saw myself in him in this one too. This series brought me a lot of genuine joy over the last few years. And even though, I’m in a healthy place now, it means so much that I had something to get me through a very dark time, and that it ends on a note similar to where I’m at now.

I’m so glad that this series ended the way it did. It was an absolute delight to read and it made me smile so much. I will miss my favourite gay vampire but again, that’s why fanfic exists!

The unbelievably brilliant character and relationship writing completely bypasses the substandard pacing and plot for me.

The plot here is a complete afterthought and I don't mind one bit. My emotionally constipated kings are happy together and there's nothing else I care about (yes, that includes
Spoilerthe demon fiance, Agathas bisexual awakening and the new chosen one
). Baz being so very much into the tail was a choice, however. But we don't kinkshame in this house. Hence, five stars, because I had a great time.

This book leaves me as mentally confused as the first one unfortunately. I love the characters and i love the story telling and I love the plot. I love the unique twists and turns and watching the puzzle come together.
However I cannot handle all the loose end we'll never know and the general feeling of incompleteness. I feel like the journey is just getting started but we have to say goodbye.
I get why the series is written the way it is but I'll never be satisfied without 8 more books telling me every little adventure these characters go on.
