The main two characters were really annoying but I did really enjoy all of the people they met along the way, the ending felt way too rushed though

Not for grown ups

Probably a good children's book but I couldn't get over the sappy writing and simplistic plot, and I'm usually pretty happy with a good kids book. It was a struggle to read such a short book. I prefer Michael Ende..

Somehow I made it through childhood without reading this book. When I finally did, in my 30s, I couldn't believe I had avoided it for so long. I adored this book. It spoke to me in a very meaningful way. Wonderful read...highly recommended.

man this book is so confusing and too overtly religious for my taste. i had no idea what was going on. none of the relationships felt believable or developed well. i remember loving it as a kid though

Okay putting aside the insane plotline (in a good provocative fantastical/sci-fi kinda way), Hope Davis as the narrator for the audiobook absolutely 200% killed it with her acting. Her voice was unbelievably adaptive and malleable - so many different creative ways to scream, cry, whisper, etc. given the numbers of characters and dialogues in this book lmao. Sometimes it felt like a fever dream, sometimes it felt like I was watching a movie, sometimes it felt like my mother is reading to me. Soo cool how just a voice can make something feel so wrong and uncanny too when roleplaying the evil forces.

I do think that if I hadn’t listened to the audiobook version, I would’ve liked the book less. As long as I avoid the movie adaptation (I heard it’s not that good?), I will always have Hope Davis’ narration inside my head every time I decide to reread this in the future. My younger self would probably be very confused reading this book if it came across his radar, but now at 25 years old, my first impression is that it is a great short introduction into the genre of sci-fi/fantasy. One of my favourite 2025 reading/listening experiences.
