wow. just wow. Butler did such an incredible job with this story that it felt more like knitting than writing. I saw someone else say that this felt like necessary reading for everyone and I wholeheartedly agree. I feel like even though America's slavery era is known through the farthest reaches of the planet, we forget just how horrifying those times really are. The page turner that this is it honestly felt like I was living the fear and dread of these characters. Rufus in particular was such an interesting and complex character. I've always been a sucker for time travel/manipulation and the way Butler utilised it in this book, showcasing how not only the world changes around Dana but also how each character changes and develops (good or bad) as the ante-bellum south corrupts their growth. Could not recommend more, eye-opening especially as someone not from the African-American race

Such a poignant and insightful novel. It really made me question humanity in itself and managed to vehicle so many emotions. Incredible and terribly sad.
