DID NOT FINISH: 39%

It's a romance first and a fantasy mystery second. I wanted to know more about the magical races and the book, but didn't care enough to wade through the same romance I've read dozens of times already

The first 200 pages of this book were rather dull to be honest. Due to the main character denying her magic, the first third of this book was spent with Diana running, doing yoga, rowing and working in the library. It wasn't exactly thrilling. That being said, if you can get past the first 200 pages, it becomes quite enjoyable.

Once Diana arrives at Matthew's mother's house we start to see more of the world of vampires. There's supernatural drama and excitement to be had and I this is the point I started to really enjoy this book. There's a bit of romance with Matthew that doesn't really interest me then things pick up again at Diana's Aunt's house. To be honest I prefer Emily and Sarah to Diana. The aunts are far more interesting and I'd happily read a book about them and their magical lives. Once Diana starts embracing her magic things get interesting again.

This book is slow in places but when it's good it's very good and the overal mystery does drag you in. I'll probably read the rest of this series after I've polished off a little more of my ever increasing TBR list.

Overall I like this very much. The world building was great and it's an intriguing story line. But ... the characterisation was a little flawed. I started out liking the heroine Diana Bishop very much but became irritated with her growing sense of falling apart in the face of adversity. Also I can't believe I'm writing this, but there was an awful lot of sleeping and eating in this book. Most of this could've been cut out resulting in a shorter, tighter book. But this doesn't mean I won't read the next installment.

Blah!! Why do I read books not worth my time, I won't be finishing this series.

Here’s the thing:

I really really enjoyed reading this. I was rapt for the entire thing. AND there were still bits that read as annoying to me.

The possessiveness and like… arrogance? Of Matthew and Diana together toward the end is a little nauseating. Diana is so sure of herself and of them. I get it, and also… it’s been a month and a half. It’s very Romeo & Juliet in a yucky way. And honestly they do a great job of explaining Matthew’s side — this dude’s been around for over a millennium, I trust that he knows himself.

Mostly just want more Hamish, more Miriam and Marcus, and more Ysabeau and Marthe. Loved the side characters A LOT.
