4.1 AVERAGE

Consuming this via audio book is a real treat, and I was sad when it was over.

I wish I could have given it a 3.5. It was a very good, very fun read.

David Sedaris is not somebody I'd ever heard of, so I've never heard him on the radio, watched any of his shows, or read any of his books. What I had seen though, was great reviews of Calypso, and it sounded a bit different to many things I've read before. It's true that you can't judge a book by its cover, but the paperback version has one of the best covers I've seen, with the face in textured wood effect.

With no context of the author, this book was still very funny. The stories he tells are of his family experiences when they come together as adults. There are still sad moments throughout, where he mentions the death of close relatives, though these are followed by more comedic events and comments.

It's a strange memoir, but funny and sarcastic which I was a big fan of. He's not someone you can relate to on every level, but he's an engaging writer and I really enjoyed reading this book.

Some LOL moments, and some cringy ones too, esp the bits about the turtle and the tumors. This is an odd man with a high, dry voice that might grate on some ears.

SEDARIS STRIKES GOLD WITH "CALYPSO"!
Sedaris' last few books, for me, have lacked his magic. That snap, that funny, that sharp remark. When I read the "Calypso" preview, I immediately got in the library queue. It was so good to read this book and laugh out loud like I did with his early works. I don't know what's funnier - his family or just the way he writes about them. And how many of us want to hang out with all of them at "Sea Section"? I couldn't love him more for naming the 'family beach house' in only a way Sedaris could do it.
I recently saw Amy Sedaris on the Colbert Show and she told of how the family has an annual tan contest at the beach house. How wonderfully ridiculous and fun does that sound?
The world needs more Sedaris!

saddest comedy book + be off putting it’s fun

this book makes me thinking about life aging and being old in a good and bad way. leik the mix of reminiscing over the old memories as time flies by and how silly ppl were growing up and how fast they memories can vanish and the silly hopefull quirks of aging it’s a delightful combo.

i read this and think wow he’s getting old and has lived life truly. then i continue reading abt the absolutely unhinged shit he’s doing as a old man and I’m just leik holy shit someone lock him up 😭😹😹😹. it’s so funny tho bc he’ll be leik yeah time flies so cherish the present to when ur old u just gotta win the idgaf war and try to feed turtles your tumor, talk crazy to ppl, and walk 150000 steps a day collecting roadkill

fr tho i love sedaris writing leik it’s just so easy to breeze through and it’s tender and silly

i always say reading his books are leik talking to a friend leik the good typa friends that u can not see for leik weeks and leik it’ll be fine u guys still besties yk

its esp nice when he drops some odd fact and ur leik oh yeah he’s said something abt this in a past book and this buzzard fact he just dropped no longer fazes me leik it rly makes me feel connected to the writer as a reader kinda explaining the whole his books are leik a convo with a friend

i could not read his work for a year then pick up a book of his and be embraced by the familiarity of his odd bizarre personality

Maybe even 2.5. I know this is suppose to be comedy but it felt more like a sad memoir exploiting family mental illness and alcoholism amongst other stories. Not that he shouldn’t be discussing these topics, it just wasn’t funny. It was sad. The parts not about those family members was somewhat funny but I think i was not ready to entertain it.
emotional funny lighthearted fast-paced

I picked up this book when I was in Barcelona in late October. I was browsing the English books section at La Central Bookstore near my hostel. The cover caught my eye right away; it is an awkward facial expression and I wanted to see what the book is about. I heard of David Sedaris and his book "Me Talk Pretty One Day" before, so I knew his book would most likely entertain me.

This collection of essays, for the most part, talk about the ordinary issues we come across everyday. Yet Sedaris writes them with piercing honesty and relentless warmth that I related to this man in so many surprising ways. Family relationships, trying to live as a unique individual in this world, judging people who are also judging us. It was so lovely, sad and funny all at the same time. I'm so glad I brought it back with me from my travels.

Full marks. A must read. David Sedaris does it again. I laughed out loud, read it out loud to others, and feel newly inspired to live life as an adventure and explore everything I can. He is without a doubt one of the greatest writers of our time!
