This was a slow burn but about midway through I couldn’t put it down.
I have been lucky to see David Sedaris live and he was hilarious and heart-wrenching at the same time - this book is no different.
Calypso is a collection of very entertaining short stories that may turn your view of the world upside-down. His relationship with his family is insightful and relatable. His depth of observation on human actions and character are superb and will have you laughing out loud.
A delightful afternoon read curled up on the couch with a rather good glass of red!

It was entertaining enough but I got the feeling that if I ever met him in real life and had to talk to him it would not end well.
A bit less funny, overall, than a “classic” Sedaris collection, which is only to say that while there’s a lot to laugh at/with here, he also deals with some very dark topics (his sister’s suicide, his mother’s alcoholism, his father’s aging/hoarding). It’s an affecting and fascinating set of stories, and I was sad when I finished it because it was over.
Classic David Sedaris. My favorite chapters were the one where he talked about the tumor he had removed from his face and the one about his mother. That one had me in tears- so very poignant and tender, yet with that Sedaris style wit thrown in.

This book is ridiculously laugh out loud funny. I also have a garbage grabber and an obsession with getting my steps in. I want to go reread all of David Sedaris’s books now.
