The perfect mix of observational humor, reflection, and story telling. The audiobook is narrated by the author too and his delivery adds to the story. I hadn’t read any of Sedaris’ work before and now I’m hooked!

David Sedaris, what a weirdo. His family too. Absolutely incredible how David Sedaris is able to tell seemingly random, rambling stories and be do hilarious, moving, and humane. Easy to read and enjoy.

I cannot sing the praises of this book loud enough. I loved every minute. In Calypso, Sedaris explores all the things you get from your family, literally and figuratively. He talks about relating to older and younger family members, the ones who are easy to love and the not so easy to love. His family sounds like mine in some ways and his approach to different situations cracked me up because I could totally relate. He considers the grief of losing a mother and a sister and how there are questions we will carry until we meet them again but he does this without becoming heavy-handed or didactic. I really appreciate the way he juxtaposed grief and love, heartache and humor, the mundane and the transcendent. And bonus, the author reads the audiobook!
Loved the audiobook version of this so much. Only downside is I spent so much of the book smiling to a point which probably bordered on creepy. A new favourite for me.
