This touched a lot on his family after the suicide of his sister, it seemed a little more heartfelt than a lot of his other writings, all of which I have loved. I think it's easy to misinterpret the way he casually discusses painful events with being callous, but I think he did a great job describing how he was processing his grief and remorse.

This was a quick and very entertaining read. Definitely laugh out loud funny at some points.

So readable but the descriptions of rampant consumerism made me want to cry a bit

an alright book, some fun anecdotes, i really enjoyed the beginning few chapters more than the rest of the book. i listened to the audiobook and i’m glad i did, his comedic timing is very good. i related a lot to his experiences, parent dying at 62, dead sibling. it was good.

 DNF around 30%.

I've loved Sedaris in the past ("Jesus Shaves" from Me Talk Pretty One Day is still one of the funniest things I've ever read), but this one was a miss for me. I wouldn't call it humor at all - it's more reflection on loss and death and family with occasional humor thrown in. I laughed a handful of times. However, that wouldn't be a dealbreaker - it was my increasing discomfort with things he said.

There were multiple moments where he described Black people in uncomfortable ways, and my final breaking point was "Your English is So Good," with transphobic comments from his partner. "Hugh hates this sort of thing and accuses me of transitioning.” and "Hugh says, “Maybe it will look better when you get your Adam's apple shaved off.” Enough for me.

wanted to read the audiobook when i realized these were audiobiographical anecdotes!

The audiobook version of this made a terrible commute for a two-day training so much more hilarious than it would have been otherwise.
