Before I review this book, let me share the story of how I came to read this one, out of order. Oh my!
As it turns out, I have already reached my limit of library holds so I couldn’t order the next book in the series. (Okay, I admit it, I am a bit of an inpatient reader!)
So, I went to my local Library and took the available Karin Slaughter books off the shelf, which was this one and one of her stand-alones – not part of any of her regular series, titled, “Cop Town.”
Taking a chance, (meaning, I was going to give in to my inpatient self and not read the series in order – and actually begin a new series – also, out of order) I decided to begin reading this one, which immediately drew me in.
And then, I realized why you don’t read them out of order.
As it turns out, I learned that one of the characters that happened to be part of the Grant County Series (apparently, they criss cross series) was revealed to me as having met with a tragedy (yikes!), and now, I need to know what happened! Are you still with me?
So, now you get why some books that are part of a series can’t just be read as stand-alone books.
And of course, I read this one, which is #5 in another one of her series, so am I in serious trouble?!!!
Although, I have to admit, it did feel like a stand-alone to some extent. I know, I appear to be contradicting myself.
Even though I recognized the one character from her other series, and knew that the characters in this series had worked together, the story still flowed and kept me engaged. So, in many respects, I give credit to the author for making that possible.
To be honest, the story grabbed my attention from the first page, just as Blindsighted did, and didn’t let me go until I turned the last page.
There are parts of the story that are hard for me to read (the violence, for one) but, getting through that (okay, I skip read that part) still allows me to appreciate the tense mystery, the flawed yet interesting characters and intelligent investigative police work.
I am an obvious fan of this series now, and more than ever I want to get back to the beginning.

This is definitely my favorite since Triptych. The background we get from Wills investigation, the dynamics we get on Faith/Evelyn/Amanda… loved it.
Another great Will Trent book! I actually loved that Amanda had a bigger role than previous books. And I love Faith so I was very invested since the first chapter. Once again the reveals are done so well, and you figure out a lot of things that you’ve been wanting answers to since the beginning of the series.

As always the genius in her plots. It’s like duh and it hits you. The comic relief is always perfect. And I love a familiar character from a previous series !
Karin Slaughter does. not. miss.
I have been on a (more than usual) Karin Slaughter Kick and decided to start the series over. I am just so impressed with how interesting this book was. It was action packed. It had so much wit. It really feels like you're watching an episode of SVU. I am absolutely obsessed.

3 1/2 stars. for some reason, this book struck me as a little less engaging than her other novels have been. it’s still a solid crime thriller, though. i think it might have been because there were enough people who knew whodunnit all along and were just stringing other characters along, that it felt like being kept at arm’s length from the action. also, there’s usually more victim perspective in her books and that was largely missing in this one, which made it harder to connect with the peril in the story.
Detective Faith Mitchell finds herself in the middle of a crisis when her mother is kidnapped. Evelyn Mitchell was forced into early retirement after Will Trent found evidence that Mitchell and members of her team had committed acts of corruption. Now Will and Faith need to piece together the puzzle. Is the kidnapping revenge from drug cartels Evelyn burned? And what does Will's boss, Amanda, know that she's not saying about her best friend?
Gripping as always, this one was one of my least favorites, simply because it was too confusing: too many gangs, too many names to remember and too many rabbit holes. But I give the author a lot of credit for Will's slow, gradual transformation. When Will gets good news, it feels completely earned after struggling for so long with his demons.
