Fallen is the 3rd book in Slaughter's Georgia Series (or the 9th book in the, what I like to call it, "Ways to Make Sara Linton Cry" Series) and, once again, Slaughter doesn't disappoint. Sara Linton takes a back seat in this one (she only cries three times, I believe). This story revolves around Will Trent's partner Faith, Faith's mother, and the skeletons that are in their family's closet. Although the plot may be a bit crazy, and it's still unbelievable how much bad stuff can happen to these poor characters, I found myself sucked into the soap opera. Slaughter knows how to tell a good story, and makes the reader feel for her characters. Hell, maybe one of these days, I'll even shed a few tears along with Sara.
First off I want to say I believe this is the 6th Karin Slaughter novel I've read this year so clearly I think she's great, probably my author of the year for books I've read this year! Having said that, this was not one of the better ones. I'm hoping the characters (Will, Faith, Sara, Amanda) aren't becoming like those members of a small cast sitcom that run out of things to interact about on set and eventually jump the shark. Certainly I'll give Will Trent #6 a try as she's earned that extra fuse and I'm hoping "Criminal" gets this great series back on track.
Continue to be really sucked into these stories. The violence and gore are cringe-worthy...in fact, I literally grimace and get grossed out sometimes, however I love the characters and the fact that there are still twists that surprise me. She has the formula down and it satisfies. I have the next one on hold and am looking forward to it. (Sadly, I mixed up the order...so I'll be reading the one or two that I unintentionally skipped by reading this one.) I'd recommend these for folks who like a good crime/suspense tale with twists and turns, but don't mind a bit of gross-o-city.
I always love Karin Slaughter's books. The Grant County series is one of my favorites of all time. She's also a Georgia author and the books take place in Georgia. Don't you just love reading a book and recognizing places and things? I do.
This book is the GBI series and focuses around agent Faith Mitchell's family. Her mom Evelyn, a former APD narcotics investigator is kidnapped. Faith arrives at her mother's home to find her infant daughter in a shed, a bloody kitchen, a dead body in the laundry room and a hostage situation in the back bedroom. Her mother is nowhere to be found. Two of the men are shot by Faith and another gets away wounded. Was Faith's mother dirty when she ran the narcotics squad at the APD? Who has kidnapped her and why haven't they contacted anyone with a ransom demand? The twists and turns in this mystery are numerous and leave you guessing until the very end. I didn't figure this one out. Was this a high brow, important read? Nope, but it was a damn good mystery with a little side of romance and I enjoyed every minute of it.

This is one of those rare books that I start and I find myself hooked into the story immediately. I could not put the book down. Very exciting, mysterious, and filled with the unexpected. I am sure it will be awhile until I come across another 5 star book!
Book Summary: Sara gets caught up in the midst of a very personal situation with Faith and her mother. During the course of the investigation, she is consulted to help move the investigation along. She begins to realize her feelings for Will while he is struggling with his feelings for her and Angie.
Evelyn, Faith's mother, gets kidnapped while babysitting Emma. No one seems to know what the cause is however Amanda keeps slowly trickling information out. As people are killed, shot at, and stabbed Faith must decide who to trust and what her next move is. The case is wraps Faith, Will, Sara and Amanda up into a world of trouble.
As always Karin Slaughter does an excellent job at writing her books. I thought I would have a very hard time with Will & Sara together because I couldn't see her with anyone else but Jeffery. She does a great job with showing how difficult the transition. It is believable and very tastefully done. The story was good and character development awesome. Overall a great book.

It feels like the series has really hit its groove - there are the predictable elements, sure, but the mystery took a backseat to the character and relationship growth. Even though it was still dark, gritty, and violent, this entry felt like a bit of a breather because it wasn't as complicated. And we end on an exhale instead of a redirect; a nice change of pace.
