Karin Slaughter

4.1 AVERAGE

Four and a half stars. A well-paced, convoluted plot that gives its secrets away slowly--and more details to fill in the large cast of characters, and how their lives and missions entangle.

Like most readers, I found that once a Karin Slaughter book is started, it's very hard to put down.

Lordy but I can’t stand Angie; but I’m not supposed to like her. BTW, she’s very different from the TV version. Some very satisfying growth, and an interesting crime, even though it was all internal.

I enjoyed this one a lot. Unfortunately, a lot happens to Faith and especially her mother, Evelyn, when she goes missing. Evelyn had been kidnapped and now everyone is wondering if the drugs were catching back up to her or not. We arent really sure what the motivation is behind the kidnapping. Do they really want the money or is there a hidden agenda here? That's what Will and Faith must figure out. They also get some help from Sara. I ship Sara and Will. Angie is not good for Will any longer. I enjoyed the Evelyn aspect of this story and that we kind of learn more about her and what had happened when she had to leave the force.

Spoilers below:
Evelyn had an affair with one of the drug snitchers and then gave up the baby to stay with Faith's dad. The baby, Caleb, was so hell bent on revenge and anger, that he orchestrated this to get back at Evelyn for giving him up all those years ago. I understand Caleb was probably like "why me and not them" but to be so ruthless and wanna torture your mother? What the heck?!? Wild to me. But I was never given up or adopted so I don't really understand the anger. It's nice that we find out Evelyn wasn't actually bad. The hidden bank account was for Caleb.

This is the weakest of the series so far. I really like Will as a character. Everyone else infuriates me. They aren’t the fun quirky characters in Will’s life from the first 4 books. Faith is crazy and abusive. Amanda (who has always been written as a gruff professional) was downright unprofessional. The twist? Come on. My hope is the rest of the series gets back to what made it great. I’ve had my fill of whatever the hell happened here.

The action centers around Faith and her mother but the personal interest story is definitely Will and Sara’s.

It’s what we’ve all been waiting for, the super buildup and Slaughter doesn’t disappoint. There is so much mystery surrounding Evelyn Mitchell and finally we get to know what happened years before Special Agent Trent investigates her and Captain Mitchell’s narcotic crew.

Don’t dare miss this installment as so much happens. As usual audiobook performer Kathleen Early is perfection and keeps up her title as my favorite female narrator.

I’m really growing to like Will Trent a lot. I’m really growing to hate Sara Linton a lot. The story was entertaining enough but I found Sara’s chasing after Will to be incredibly annoying. Throughout all of the Grant series, all we ever heard was how hard it was for Sara to get past Jeffrey cheating on her...how hurtful, how devastating, how hard to forgive. Then in this book, we get Sara acknowledging that Will is married but because Angie is so horrible, somehow it’s ok that she’s actively chasing a married man. No. I would have loved the two of them together if Will had separated officially....started divorce or annulment proceedings. But no, he’s still married. You don’t get to write a series of 5,6 or 7 books crucifying the man for cheating but then make it no problem just to push a relationship in the new series along. Shame on Karin Slaughter for this cheap move. And my other issue with this one was that Will, who’s supposed to be a great detective spends most of his time getting piecemeal information from Amanda. It takes away much of his use.

My first 5 star Karin Slaughter rating and I don’t think any other book of hers that I’ve read so far is more deserving. As much as this is still a crime thriller, the romance in it had me like

I was pretty distracted listening to this but it seemed pretty standard and entertaining
