The Perfect Lie

He jumped to his death infront of witnesses. Now his wife is being charged with murder.

I mean if that doesn't instantly intrigue you then I don't know what will. This book was such a page turner, I struggled to put it down! Spain throws us right into the action from the first chapter with Danny taking his own life and how everything spirals out of control for Erin from there. I absolutely love a thriller like this, nothing slow paced about it, you're immediately hooked.

I really enjoyed the dual time line of the current court case and then going back to the original incident. It was a little confusing at times because some things just weren't adding up but I think that just added to the intensity of it all because I was left with more questions I wanted answered.

This was a great twisty thriller, I was on tenterhooks throughout. A really enjoyable read and one that I'd reccomend to any thriller lover out there!

Thankyou to @netgalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review

Erin Kennedy moved to New York from Ireland 5 years ago, after a family tragedy. Now happily married, she is looking to the future. When she opens the door to her husband Danny's police colleagues one morning she thinks it's just another call out, another missed weekend together. Then she sees Danny's face, and watches as he walks to their apartment window and jumps to his death, watched by his colleagues. Eighteen months later, Erin is in court charged with her husband's murder - what has happened in those eighteen months to bring her here?

I've loved every book I've read of Jo Spain's so far. This one threw me initally with being set in New York (I clearly hadn't read the blurb before I started it) but it didn't take long for me to be engrossed in the story.

The opening scene of the book is confronting, with Danny jumping to his death. Immediately readers are thrown in to the action, and it becomes clear from the earliest chapters that something isn't as it seems, with Erin being spurred into her own investigation into what was going on and why Danny would do what he did.

As is often the case with these sorts of books the story moves between characters and timelines. It's easy to keep track of when and where you are though because the sections are very clearly identified (then and now), and the characters are distinctive. The format works well, telling the story from several directions until everything converges and we find out what has happened.

I must admit I started to click what was going on part way through this one, the clues are all there if you pay attention to what you are being told and shown. I was fascinated by the ride and the explanation of what happened and why though so still enjoyed the read right up to the end.

This book is brilliant. The first chapter leaves you thinking WTF and you have to read on.

Erin lives in the US, settling down with Danny after moving there from Ireland. Danny is a cop and everything in their life seems to be hunky dory, until one morning Danny’s partner comes to visit and the next thing you know Danny is jumping out of the fourth floor window!

So many questions that need to be answered and no one is helping Erin to understand.

She finds friends in people she didn’t think she should to help her find the unbelievable truth that led to her husbands death.

A gripping book with lots of different plot lines which did not lead to confusion or misunderstanding. Really well written and thoroughly enjoyed!

I’ve had my hunches on how the story would end, but still got bested. Dirty cops and power play taken up a notch. Good twist.

Such a dramatic opening to a book; I was hooked! It did start to drag about half way though but it picked back up and surprised me with the ending. Would definitely read more from this author.
