Excellent piece of literature. Just excellent. Stay away from the awful Hollywood monstrosity of a movie though.

I thoroughly enjoyed this classic tale of alien invasion.
Like many people I have seen the movie starring Tom Cruise so it was strange to read this happening towards the end of 19th century.
The action of the novel  was happening in and around London, and I really enjoyed reading the parts where my local area was mentioned. I always find these bizarrely fascinating:)
The book is written in a style of an account, memoir and the story is being told from the perspective of the narrator (unnamed 🤔 or have I missed something?)
I can imagine how this would be a scary book to read when it was first published.
Overall I found it enjoyable and not outdated at all!
The story was flowing nicely, the language was easy to follow and so… British :) I loved it.

Tom Cruise did it better

This book can be very hard to follow at times, but I really enjoyed it

I love Wells' writing and how the science of the Victorian era was. I really liked seeing how Wells and the scientist of that day believed the universe to be. Like how they believed that Mars was covered in red plants and that's why it looks red.

I just really liked this story and I am so glad I reread this book. I only really remembered the plot from the movie and the adaptation is so different.

I did not care for this book at all. It took everything I had to get through it. I mostly listen to audio books on my way to and from work, as it's a 40 minute drive. This was narrated by the same person who did The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo trilogy, and I loved him with those books. He couldn't do this one justice. I tried...and it's time I'll never get back. Onto something better

“I felt the first inkling of a thing that presently grew quite clear in my mind, that oppressed me for many days, a sense of dethronement, a persuasion that I was no longer a master, but an animal among the animals, under the Martian heel.”

There were parts of this that I LOVED. And parts that were pretty slow-paced and uninteresting. I was jazzed the entire beginning portion until the narrator started to break off and talk about his brother’s experience? The brother narrative super lost me, and I was convinced I wasn’t going to like the whole as much because of it. It was pretty lackluster and felt underdeveloped in comparison to the lead’s experiences. BUT, Wells turned it back around for me in the second part of the book.

I loved the entire second half. I got chills as the lead was hiding, and the descriptions of the environment and alien activity blew me away. This was a huge comeback for me. Definitely worth a read.

Why is it when it's a "Classic" I go...yeah this is not for me. I am really regretting not listening to this one. I heard it's better that way. Trying to read this via my phone browser (yep, could not download as an e-book) was another pain which is why it took me so long to get through it. It's fine, just not that interesting after a while. Reading about an invasion of aliens from Mars would probably have scared me prior to watching E.T., but now I am like, cool aliens. I can see why those in the 1930s hearing this via radio lost their minds though. I watched the 2005 film adaption of this starring Tom Cruise when it first came out though. And I loved Spielberg's visuals.

Tom Cruise running (badly) will always crack me up.

"War of the Worlds" was published by H.G. Wells back in the 1890s and it follows an unnamed narrator and his brother dealing with the fight between mankind (cue dramatic music) and extra terrestrials (Martians).

I have to say I wished for someone's name to be said during the entire book. It's hard to care about someone you don't have a name for. We just know unnamed is in Surrey and his brother is in London. I will also say the flow of the story is slow as anything. I get why since this was a serial, but it's hard to hang on when every chapter ends on a cliffhanger. I also didn't realize that this was two books in one so I thought I was done until it was all and here is book two. I maybe groaned out loud. I do find it kind of funny how the Martians got defeated.
Got to love germs did it. With everything COVID-19 the past two plus years, I can see this happening in real life.
Interesting, but I struggled with not being old or British enough to understand everything. I like classics and older books, but I think I’ll take this one again after some research.
