I did not care for this book at all. It took everything I had to get through it. I mostly listen to audio books on my way to and from work, as it's a 40 minute drive. This was narrated by the same person who did The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo trilogy, and I loved him with those books. He couldn't do this one justice. I tried...and it's time I'll never get back. Onto something better

“I felt the first inkling of a thing that presently grew quite clear in my mind, that oppressed me for many days, a sense of dethronement, a persuasion that I was no longer a master, but an animal among the animals, under the Martian heel.”
There were parts of this that I LOVED. And parts that were pretty slow-paced and uninteresting. I was jazzed the entire beginning portion until the narrator started to break off and talk about his brother’s experience? The brother narrative super lost me, and I was convinced I wasn’t going to like the whole as much because of it. It was pretty lackluster and felt underdeveloped in comparison to the lead’s experiences. BUT, Wells turned it back around for me in the second part of the book.
I loved the entire second half. I got chills as the lead was hiding, and the descriptions of the environment and alien activity blew me away. This was a huge comeback for me. Definitely worth a read.

Why is it when it's a "Classic" I go...yeah this is not for me. I am really regretting not listening to this one. I heard it's better that way. Trying to read this via my phone browser (yep, could not download as an e-book) was another pain which is why it took me so long to get through it. It's fine, just not that interesting after a while. Reading about an invasion of aliens from Mars would probably have scared me prior to watching E.T., but now I am like, cool aliens. I can see why those in the 1930s hearing this via radio lost their minds though. I watched the 2005 film adaption of this starring Tom Cruise when it first came out though. And I loved Spielberg's visuals.
Tom Cruise running (badly) will always crack me up.
"War of the Worlds" was published by H.G. Wells back in the 1890s and it follows an unnamed narrator and his brother dealing with the fight between mankind (cue dramatic music) and extra terrestrials (Martians).
I have to say I wished for someone's name to be said during the entire book. It's hard to care about someone you don't have a name for. We just know unnamed is in Surrey and his brother is in London. I will also say the flow of the story is slow as anything. I get why since this was a serial, but it's hard to hang on when every chapter ends on a cliffhanger. I also didn't realize that this was two books in one so I thought I was done until it was all and here is book two. I maybe groaned out loud. I do find it kind of funny how the Martians got defeated.
Got to love germs did it. With everything COVID-19 the past two plus years, I can see this happening in real life.
Interesting, but I struggled with not being old or British enough to understand everything. I like classics and older books, but I think I’ll take this one again after some research.

Me gustó el final pero no sé si fui yo y mi circunstancia de vida (planeando mudanza y llevándola a cabo) pero lo cierto es que había tramos que me hastiaban.
La mujer de la pistola tenía más personalidad que el protagonista.

Groundbreaking for its time of release.
The War of the Worlds is a groundbreaking novel for its time period. Published in 1898, these concepts were only just forming, and the intricacy in which Wells writes about them is both inspiring and entertaining.
Unfortunately it was not all greatness and wonder for me; Wells has a strange fascination with describing exactly everything his character ate during the invasion which did not make for interesting literature.
Other parts of the novel were a struggle because I believe Wells himself was attempting to describe something that he had no words for--but that should be taken with a grain of salt because, again, 1898. While modern science fiction authors have a plethora of terms to fall back upon or use in the aid of describing a certain device, Wells was in the age of horse drawn carriages and women who "got the vapors".
Why you should pick it up: This is one of the deepest roots for this type of science fiction, and it's always good to know how things began. The writing and the plot are both well done--some of the one-liners are very unique.
Why you should leave it: If you are going to compare it to modern day science fiction. If you don't have a particular interest in everything the main character ate during the story. Some of the writing is clunky, and the women are terribly underwritten.
