Guess if the aliens *really* wanted to blow up the world, they should have gotten vaccinated!

The general story of The War of the Worlds is well known -- aliens attack, and Earth struggles to fight back. What I didn't remember (or perhaps know in the first place), was that it was written so very long ago -- 1898! The technology coming from the aliens was science fiction in the extreme back then - so outlandish as to be completely fiction. Today the rockets that the Martians sent (with the exception of them coming from Mars instead of Earth) are more fact than fiction. I couldn't help but imagine what theoretical Martians would have thought of the Mars rovers coming to their planet.I also appreciated the lack of many alien invasion cliches -- information was hard to come by. Part of this was due to the era this was written, but as more of humanity is wiped out, it becomes even harder to get information, which seems quite realistic.
Spoiler
Eventually those bacteria and microorganisms that Earthlings have evolved immunity to over billions of years take down the Martians, who never evolved immune resistance to these microscopic defenders of Earth.
Pretty good book. I thought the ending was pretty creative.
I got a little bored with the audiobook, but overall I can see why this book was so groundbreaking when it was first published.
Classic story about aliens, but mostly about society and how they would react to an invasion (hint, not very intelligently, although I'm sure that would be slightly different now in the 21st century with national security such a priority). The narrator takes us through from beginning to end of the invasion, with emphasis on his survival. There's really not a whole lot of descriptions of the aliens, which was a little frustrating at first, since the 21st century has prepared me for so much flashy death and destruction (in 3D!). But I found the book enjoyably creepy and it was a good start to my Halloween reading.

I listened to the audio book read by David Tenant. This was a great way to read this foundational sci fi book.
Not only does this story tell a fantastical story but lends us an insight into what life was like in the UK in the time it was written.
