I read this when I feel like I haven't been appreciating my mum. Great work by Tan, so insightful and true to life. Great exploration of both bonds between mothers and daughters and all people with our heritage.

An excellent well written novel that deals with intergenerational connection, trauma and the often fraught bonds between mothers and daughters. Also the stories that deal with the Mothers pasts in China are incredibly evocative and have some wonderful imagery.
Took me a couple chapters to get into it, but wow. The last line brought tears to my eyes instantly
