I think I missed the point of this one. I usually really enjoy Tan’s picture-frame narration style, but this was mixed with a Mahjong game set up of 4 sections with 4 chapters each that wasn’t working for me. Some of the stories featured characters from other stories, but not heavily unless they were a mother-daughter pair. I think I would have liked it if all of the stories were working toward telling one larger story (which I guess could be seen as “the Chinese immigrant and first generation American story? But I wanted more than that I guess).

All I can really say is that I’m glad this wasn’t the first Amy Tan book I read or I doubt I would continue reading her books.

Very good stories about mothers and daughters and the various trials of their lives.

Terrible at teaching mahjong

A fascintaing collection of interwoven stories over generations of chinese emigrants and their lives before and after emigration as well as their children's experiences on gtowing up with two cultures.
It is very well written and conveys the emotional aspects as well as the beliefs good.
