Very strange but very thought provoking little novella. It can easily be read in one sitting. For those who like sci-do dystopian things mixed with a bit of gender theory.

Wildly disturbing.

Also a pretty accurate depiction of the human (even the mushroom headed human) need for connection and…propagation. The body horror was unsettling in that “Alien” way where man’s worst nightmare is woman’s reality.

‘Peace, pipe,’ the other story in this book, was a reflection on communication and anthropomorphizing which was pretty interesting.

I received a complimentary copy of the book to review for Project Fandom. Here is my review, not too spoilery!

I feel like being a mother actually adds a lot of dimension to this story. I don't think it would be nearly so profound if I hadn't already had my daughter. I think that the gender swap is interesting but I don't know that men will get the point as well without the relevant cultural experience of having been a woman to make this really meaningful. And the story doesn't tell a woman anything she hasn't already experienced for herself (most likely anyway, I know not everyone experiences rape or childbirth but many of us do... pretty much every woman has experienced culture based sexism of some kind though). If it could give even an inkling of how we feel it would certainly be a worth while read for many men. I do think that it's an excellent example of domestic violence i.e. raped, pregnant, trapped... I would imagine though that the type of people who could benefit from reading this probably won't.

TW: Body Horror, Trypophobia

I was very lucky to read a copy that had both The Beauty and Peace, Pipe.

The Beauty:
This novel is there to fuck shit up. Fuck your genders, fuck your idea of humanity, fuck your idea of safety. All told in a much more elegant and literary way, of course. Uncle Ted managed to be my least favorite character as well as my favorite. The epitome of the folly of man, the wish-washy nature of someone who always wants to exude and take control without giving way to their actual beliefs on anything, or worse, knowing what they're doing is wrong but knowing it's the only way to keep control. Also the inevitable discussions on pro-choice is something I'd love to see someone write about in regard to this book.

Peace, Pipe:
This beautiful sci-fi horror continues the theme by telling you fuck your stereotypes and how you’ll choose to view me, I am the creator of my own story. A nonbinary story at its core, the beauty of delving into languages and how we communicate with one another, how we determine what is the most important thing we want to convey, and who deserves that communication is explored not only via a short story but also a very short timespan within said piece.

Friend or foe? Madness or innovation? We leave the worlds of Whiteley without ever knowing.

I don’t know what I think about this book. It’s a nice story and maybe I’m missing the message of the book.

It’s beautifully written, you can really picture the characters in your mind. The story is almost poetic.
