Inconsistent characterization-levels. Some flowed well, others not as much.

I listened to the audiobook version and performance was very good, so don't let that put you off. But the story itself is... Fan service. As a MTG player, the story was predictable and fairly amateurly written. The parts of the story not so tied to the cards (Teyo, Rat, some of the members of the guilds) were actually interesting, so the issues may not be the author's fault but more the constraints of the plot before the book. If you're a player, you'll enjoy the references. If you're not, I don't think you'll see this as a masterpiece.

The deaths did nothing to me but this battle was like the Battle of Hogwarts in one book. Very action packed and had me gripping the spine.

Vraska is my favorite character who I always looked forward to reading.

It got the story across & helped me place a few things that the card series flavour text didn't mention, but overall very poorly (& possibly hastily??) written.

Paying $15 for this after reading the excellent Children of the Nameless (which was Free...) felt like a bait & switch.

Overall, glad I read it as I consider myself a Vorthos, but sad that the many free stories on WotC's website & the old MTG novels are, in most cases, many factors better.

Definitely a book to enjoy if you're more interested in the lore behind the Magic! The Gathering cards. Have read better books, have read worse ones for sure.

Only “worth reading“ because I already knew all these characters, but otherwise mostly a disappointment. I don’t really know what I’m expecting, not great literature or anything, but this doesn’t even live up to prior magic novels.

Disappointing. I hope they don't stop writing books but does better than this weak story telling.

I enjoyed it despite its flaws.

Merged review:

I enjoyed it despite its flaws.

*cataclysmic battle occurs between undead super soldiers and armored elves mounted on wolves the size of bears*

'The clash was epic.'

I echo much of the complaints found in these reviews. It's kinda disappointing that so much happens, written in uninspired and bland text. A zombie snake god the size of a building gets its soul drank by a cursed sword, but I felt little excitement reading it.

Maybe a comic book would've been better.

There are some parts I had to cringe, like interrupting a battle to note a character's washboard abs or to monologue about their unfortunate history with past lovers. Maybe I'm just not the target audience for this book in the first place.

Great lore for the new set. Makes all the cards mean something.
