Great lore for the new set. Makes all the cards mean something.
Man, that was a lot of fun. Took me way too long to read though.
The writing was pretty great when compared to the other stories they have online. I was just not a fan of how the characters interacted and how the plot developed. It seemed to go contrary to how they were written in previous stories and their motives changed drastically
If you aren't into Magic lore already then I would skip this, but if you enjoy the setting and don't need backstory then it's a quick read and a fair amount of fun.
If you took the last 45 minutes of Avengers: Endgame and made it into a book substituting characters from the Magic the Gathering universe, you would have this book. Seeing as this was my first Magic the Gathering novel (other than a short story), it was kind of like watching that last part of Endgame without seeing the other movies. There were a million characters, all from past novels, and many of them had a history with each other.
I read this because I'm running a D&D campaign in the Ravnica setting so I thought it would help me add flavor. Not sure it really did that. It wasn't horrible, but really it just felt like one long battle scene. It did make me curious about some of the other characters though, so I may be reading more MTG novels in the future.

Overall I found War of the Spark to be an entertaining read. I've seen a lot of comments that rakes this book over the coals for the simplistic language and writing, but it really didn't bother me. For younger readers looking to get into the lore of MTG I think this isn't a bad starting spot. The novel does start in the middle of the action which would probably throw some readers off, but it provides enough context to situate newcomers as it progressed. The shifting perspectives of the book is both a boon and a bane to the text. One hand it was interesting seeing the action in Ravnica through multiple viewpoints, but I know that some would have prefered having a core characters as the protagonist. While WoS isn't the most groundbreaking of lore texts, it was a simple read that kept me entertained. If you are critical of the games lore, you may find this book to be a letdown, but if you want a fun and simple read with some of your favorite characters from the MTG lore I'd recommend WoS.
A fun read, but a little like dropping in on the Lord of the Rings just as the battle for Gondor begins - all the pieces are in place and everything is happening at once.

As a Magic the Gathering fan, I looked forward to reading this story about the latest set. The story filled in a lot of details (sometimes too much detail) about what happened in Ravnica that day.
MTG fans will like the book, but if you don't know much about Magic, this book likely isn't for you. The writing is pretty weak as well; not very sophisticated. Also, there are a lot of points where the author goes into boring detail about what the Guilds are and that sort of lore thing. I'm guessing that is for the non-MTG fans, but they likely won't be reading this book. For those of us who are familiar, this amount of detail took away from the story.
There was a lot of "telling" instead of "showing" what was happening. These kinds of things could have been left out and made more room for us to really get to know WHO the characters really are. What are their motivations? What are they afraid of. That type of thing.
