I liked the movie better, in the end. There were some nice extra scenes here that added to things, but I was kind of annoyed with the direction they took Rose in some of this stuff. I enjoyed her muchly in the film and was glad to see some more scenes with her here, but I don't really think having her seem kinda thirsty and jealous of Rey early on was the right direction.
But, I also never really got the Finn/Rose pairing to begin with. They were fun, but the romance felt real forced. I was glad to get a little more Paige/Rose in the book.
I always like to read the novelizations. It gives a nice different perspective at times. This one was okay, it just reminded me a lot of what I liked about the film and also what I didn't (Rey/Kylo? Ugh)

I enjoy the film quite a lot and I was looking forward to reading the book version. It was a relief that the novelization isn't just a rehash of the film, it gives great insight into the mindset of the main (and some not so main) characters. The additional scenes help build some relationships and add background information and more context to the plot.

I loved all the extra scenes with Rose and Finn and I wish they were in the movie. The two of them go on a very interesting journey and grow a lot as people. I'm here for it and their mission, including the Canto Bight scenes which I don't find unnecessary or meaningless at all. It allows us to explore the galaxy and the consequences of war, while delivering good character stuff. Plus, the section that is told from BB8's point of view is very entertaining.
Also, I loved reading from Rose's pov and getting to know her more. My one criticism is how some of her thoughts when Finn mentioned Rey had a jealous vibe. It's clear from early on that Rose facies Finn but I don't see her as someone who would dislike Rey just because Finn cares about her. Women deserve better than being depicted as petty rivals. I don't think this is what the book is trying to do though (but it reads that way a little). Much of Rose's negative feelings towards Finn's devotion to Rey comes from the disappointment about Finn not being the hero Rose thought he was. For someone as dedicated to the Resistance as Rose is, it's hard to understand that he would desert for one person. Later, she comes realize why Finn cares so much about Rey and that she shouldn't think of him as selfish for it, which was good to see. And the conversation FInn and Rose have about Rey possibly coming back with a Padawan braid was hilarious.

Another thing I really liked was Rey's inner monologue, Jason Fry has a good handle on her character (I know he wrote [b: Rey's Survival Guide|25111226|Rey's Survival Guide|Jason Fry|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1445051479s/25111226.jpg|44804936] which I own and need to read). It was fascinating to see her learn new things as she is becoming a Jedi. The novelization succeeds in shedding more light on her decision to try to save Kylo Ren and the connection between the two of them. Which I don't and will never see as romantic but I understand why they are drawn to each other. Still, it isn't Rey's task to redeem him, especially when he doesn't want to be, as his actions seem to suggest.
Rey's strength comes from balancing power and compassion, the latter is what guides her actions. She doesn't want to turn away from Kylo completely after their confrontation, but she knows he has to make the step towards redemption on his own. If he's not doing that, there's nothing she can do but leave and go where she's needed.

What I wished the novel had was an Amilyn Holdo point of view but I get why it didn't happen for plot related reasons. She's an intriguing character and it would be great to see her in another novel beyond [b: Leia: Princess of Alderaan|34860402|Leia Princess of Alderaan (Star Wars)|Claudia Gray|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1509816682s/34860402.jpg|56102984] or in anything, really. Theobviously romantic relationship friendship between her and Leia is worth exploring and their scene together was one of the highlights.
Other than that, I would also say the novel was a bit slow to start but once it gets going, it doesn't stop. Finally, one (very serious) downside: not enough Porgs, at least compared to the movie. Yes, I choose to stan these ridiculous space birds.

Started out with more promise than most Star Wars adaptations getting inside some characters heads and scenes that didn't appear in the movie, but in the end it didn't give you anything you didn't already know.
The Last Jedi wasn't my favorite Star Wars movie, and this wasn't my favorite Star Wars book. I liked the writing, and the internalization we got from the characters especially Rose and Poe.
I've never been a fan of Kylo Ren or the Reylo dynamic, and unfortunately this book really delves into that. I'm quite anxious about how that will play out in episode nine.
The best part of this book is Princess Leia. I adore her and Carrie Fisher. Leia really stood out to me in this because because she had some fantastic internalization. I can't even imagine how horrifix her life has been, and she's never been tempted by the dark side of the force. She is so strong, and is such a good leader.
Overall, I'm glad I read this book, but I'm not going to read it again.

im only giving it four stars cause finn is an oblivious fool and i Love him and rose gets the attention she deserves in this
This was fantastic. While the battle scenes will never match the screen, everything else had added sparkle. The scene with a shirtless Kylo? Even better on the page.
So I enjoyed the movie, but expected more from the novelization. One of my favorite things about the novelization of the prequel series was how they added and enriched what I saw on the screen. While Jason Fry is a good author, I didn't walk away from the book knowing more about what our heroes were thinking. So not a bad story, but one I had already seen on the big screen.
