Apparently there is not a universe where I can read about Luke Skywalker becoming one with the Force and not weep. Even while at work.
I always try to read the movie adaptation and I usually am pretty meh about them, but this one does a pretty great job of being the movie without being just like the movie. I still liked the movie better.
SPOILERS
Luke refers to Rey as "his niece" to the caretakers on Ach-To...? PLEASE LET THIS BE TRUE?!
The lightsaber Rey brings to Luke may not actually have been Luke's, or may have been his but was also a lot of others lightsaber?
I love movie Rose, I do not like book Rose.
I wish there was a bit more Holdo. She was just as glossed over here as in the movie. Boo.
I enjoyed reading Snoke's tiny bit and seeing a brief explanation of how the Emperor had planned for a downfall, which led to the creation of The First Order.
Luke and Leia know something. We don't know the something. What IS IT?!
Luke did not immediately start a new Jedi order because he was afraid, so completely contrary to the former canon (Legends). Only started training others because of Ben Solo.

This one was much better on expanding on the movie.
I was disappointed in the movie and while the book does give some background information I am just not feeling it. It's nothing against Jason Fry as he was going off the story told in the film but ... Meh. I can totally see why the R3ylo shippers like it but that ship really doesn't work for me.
I'm sad I didn't like it being the big Star Wars fangirl that I am but can't like everything, I guess.
(ETA: For some reason this says I read it twice - I only read it once and I can't seem to edit the dates. Oh well. I didn't like it enough to read it twice. lol)

3.5 - The Last Jedi is my favorite of the Star Wars films, so I was excited to finally get around to reading the novelization. Of course the bones of the story come from Rian Johnson, bless him. The movie does a great job of showing over telling, and this book does a lot of good telling to complement the showing (e.g. what was X character really thinking and feeling in this moment?). I recognized some of the deleted scenes that didn’t make the final movie cut but fit in just fine in the novelization and enjoyed some of the little additions Jason Fry made in the story, especially adding context to Rose and Paige’s relationship in the beginning, and the anecdote about the caretakers at the end.
However, what irked me the most about this book is that the author wrote so much of it in past perfect tense. It feels like such a random nitpicky thing but I’ve read so many books written in this way that once i catch onto it I can’t un-notice it and it completely mars my ability to fully enjoy the story. To me, overuse of “had been” and “has done” in the prose starts to feel messy and distracting. There was so much of it in here I had to put the book down several times (I could have otherwise finished it in a day or two because, as I said, I love this story)! This is the main reason for 3.5 stars over 4 or 5. I rounded up because I want The Last Jedi to get the love it truly deserves!

Putting aside the problems with the movie this was a well done book. The writing flowed well and the characters all felt distinct. There were also deleted scenes from the movie added as well as nice small extra bits of dialogue that gave more depth to the characters.
This did give a bit of a look into Snoke. He seems to have actually know Palps as an adolescence. But it is confirmed he's not old whatshisname in Aftermath. That looks like it'll be as good as it gets.
I think I most appreciated Leia and Chewie reuniting at the end on the Falcon.
The book tried to make sense of certain questionable scenes like the hyperspace jump as well as the sort of cloaking the shuttles have by referencing Cobalt Squadron. Then the rumor about Phasma being some warrior goddess of her homeplanet was a nice callback to the Phasma book. It really tried to branch out and explain things, but there is only so much a person can do.

This was excellent, if marred by some odd punctuation errors. I really wish we had gotten some of these scenes that were added.
