Some novelizations of movies read like mechanical prosebots simply spit out the script in book form.
This is not that. It reads like an actual book, as if the book came first and the movie was made from it, and there is a wealth of small connecting details woven throughout the story that makes the narrative flow in a way a movie sometimes just can't manage. There are also many touching, hilarious, or just plain interesting insights throughout the book. Discovering the Falcon's opinions about C3PO or eavesdropping on Admiral Ackbar's acerbic thoughts about youth today are just two of the little extras this novelization gives you. I think Fry did an excellent job filling out the story and I enjoyed the book immensely.
If you're of the opinion that the whole franchise is now "ruined" you'll want to skip the book, as you've already decided everything is awful, but if you enjoyed The Last Jedi as a movie and want more detail and insight into the characters, you'll enjoy the novelization and find it worth your time.

I really like The Last Jedi and I love the novelization. It's possibly my favorite novelization of any of the Disney movies so far. So many added details, extra scenes, and references to other media, all woven in organically. (One of the major highlights for me, personally, is BB8's monologues.) It "fixes" the movie's flaws in all the right ways, explaining rather than undoing. Jason Fry's writing is great and Marc Thompson's narration is predictably excellent.
Of course, the book isn't perfect; there are still a few little dull spots here and there, the timeline is still odd, and Marc Thompson's Rose voice is probably my least-favorite of all his character impressions.
Aside from that, it is fantastic.

I have to admit I prefer the original books to the novelisations but this was a good adaptation. I liked the extra bits overall though the start did feel a little unnecessary in my opinion. I loved seeing more of Leia in the book though and seeing her thought processes. Overall a solid read but not amazing.
I'm not crying at all, some salt from Crait's surface or something just got in my eye...s.
Please people, stop leaving Ben Solo standing there alone. I can't deal with all the feelings!
This novelization was a great adaptation and had just some really beautiful writing and character moments. And it shed some light on some (well just two main ones) characters' thoughts and feelings during certain scenes, which kept running and rebuilding my heart.
I flew through this book, hungering for more.

I don't think I can say enough good things about this novelization. It follows the movie to a T, and the expanded version offers readers more details that greatly enhance and help unify the Star Wars universe at this point in the Galactic timeline.
There were a few places where Fry's characterizations and takes admittedly did not align with my own, but that doesn't detract from the novel overall. It was very well written and wonderfully descriptive. From what I can remember, Foster's novelization of The Force Awakens didn't delve too deeply into the science and mechanisms of hyperspace, the engineering of spacecraft, and internal operations of the First Order's fleet. Fry provided that and in great detail, which helps make this insightful and also rounds out some of what is depicted in the movie.
Finally, the backstories that are wonderfully woven into the main narrative are excellent in helping to understand characters, their motives, and their thought processes as well as the greater impetus and strategies of the Resistance and the First Order.

Reylo fanfic. The best part was definitely when Luke told the island caretakers that Rey was his niece. Weep. A good adaptation overall with some interesting, if not entirely unexpected, insight into the characters.
Star Wars movie novelisations need to bring something new to the film, maybe some extended scenes or a perspective from a character that wasn't too clear in the film.
This has some of those, but not enough in my opinion. Some scenes were just the dialog from the film, with no real setting.
No need to read unless you are a big Star Wars fan and wan to complete all the books.
Narration was top notch again, which is not a surprise for Star Wars audiobooks.

4,5/5

I love listening to the audiobooks of the novelizations of the star wars movies. I started this before Thanksgiving and was finally able to finish it this week. I'm very much ready for IX!
Well, it's Star Wars which is my life so course I enjoyed this! Loved the film, loved the book! I enjoyed the additional information and being able to enter the character's heads through a novel and getting a different perspective on their actions and feelings. The scene with Leia and Chewie near the end of the book I wished had been in the film.
