I wasn't expecting this book to hit me so hard in the feels 🥺

This is a cute story about a girl, Clementine, trying to find herself amid loss, family heartbreak, and young-adulthood... and she happens to live in an apartment that sends her back in time seven years, with no rhyme or reason into when it happens. Only that it happens during important moments in her life and the time shift will collide with whoever is living in the apartment at that time. (Enter Iwan.)

Iwan is an adorable and cozy love interest to read. Him and Clementine's story is adorable, heart warming, and has you guessing the whole time when their lives will intersect - but at many times also comes together almost too easy.

The true magic of this story is in all the ways that there lives intersect in moments and people outside of the apartment. It gets you rooting for them to finally catch up to the same time and makes the build up of the end of the story that much more meaningful.
I was surprised to find myself so emotional during the moment Iwan walks out out the door when he moves out of the apartment. And don't even get me started on the moment when her aunt walked through the door 😭. I was almost thankful their interaction didn't go further and we didn't see that conversation play out, because I would have been a wreck.

Speaking of, the relationship Clementine has with her aunt and her friends is so much the heart of this book. It's such an emotional and meaningful journey through grief, friendship, and the journey of who you always thought you would be vs. who you actually grow into as an adult. I was really surprised by this part of the book - it ended up being so much more than I thought it would be. Overall, it was a really enjoyable and heart-warming read 💛

I'm going to be honest here. I had this book on my TBR for a while but I knew it had some kind of concept that made it a little different and I wasn't sure if I could get on board with that. However, I heard great reviews from readers I trust, so I decided to give it a try. OMG, I loved it!! The writing is amazing and I was quickly absorbed into the story and couldn't put it down. I felt like I was highlighting in my Kindle so often because there are just some amazing lines. The romance is beautiful and unique. The friendships and the character growth are wonderful. And the food...omg, Ashley writes about such delicious food. I enjoyed all the chef & restaurant talk. I'm craving tacos from a food truck, too. The star of this book though is the back and forth between Clementine & Iwan. I kept waiting to see what each chapter brought with the same anticipation that I imagine Clementine had each time she unlocked her apartment door. I had so many questions while I was reading and slowly my questions would be answered and then I'd have new curiosities. The Seven Year Slip is an incredibly fun book to experience while also dealing with some pretty heavy and sad topics. Please make sure you read the author's note that explains what happened while she was writing the book and why she made certain choices.
I mostly read this book on my Kindle (while relaxing in the pool) but I also listened to the audiobook. Brittany Pressley did an excellent job with Clementine's voice.

A delicious read! I was a bit skeptical of this book at first and almost didn’t read it. I am so glad that I did! The writing is beautiful and the story truly takes you into another world. There are twists and turns and none of them are what you expect and it is beautiful. A beautiful story about love, life and grief. I’d recommend to anyone.

This one is tricky for me. The book had the potential to be wonderful but it fell short for me, though it had its moments. It was cute, it was heartfelt, and any complaints I have are only because I know this book could have been just that much better.

A few issues:
  • Clementine and Iwan's convos often read as trying-too-hard-to-be-banter rather than actually being cute and witty. I much preferred when they had real discussioss with each other.
  • Drew and Fiona felt like afterthoughts rather than full characters in their own right.
  • There were some descriptions and turns of phrase that came up a few times. I think they were intended to be callbacks to previous scenes, but instead felt clunky and repetitive, like the author had forgotten she'd already used that phrasing before.
  • I didn't like how much Clementine used her job as her identity. Her job doesn't have to define her, but she acts like it's this huge, groundbreaking thing to want change.

Lastly, I'm not big on time travel stories, but that's a me thing. The plot made sense of the time travel aspect pretty well, all things considered.
