A centuries-long, multi-perspective narrative is a hard needle the thread and I think, unfortunately, this just missed for me. The first act of the book is rich in character building and compelling storytelling. But by the last third I felt like I knew where everything was heading (I did) and I was reading mostly to get it done. I really enjoyed each of the three women's perspectives and wish that structure had continued through the whole book.
Discovering that Charlotte's chapters were essentially her relaying her story to Alice felt like it broke the structure of the storytelling in a way that didn't work for me.

Still a fun read, toxic lesbian vampires will always be worth my time, but didn't end up living up to expectations based on the start of the book.

3.5 ⭐️ This was an emotionally impactful book. It was so hard to read about the struggles they all went through with their sexuality and how decisions were made for them or taken away from them. This book also deals with heavy grief and conflict. I just wish there was more to the story though. There are a lot of times chapters are just describing their emotions and internal struggles and years going by without them having done much. So I wish there was a bit more story there.

not gonna lie, it was a relief to finally read a sapphic vampire book that didn't make me wanna rip my hair out, questioning the entire genre. the story is lush and boasts exquisite world-building, as well as the usual type of bold, unabashedly forward female characters that V.E. Schwab is very fond of writing. although there's nothing in particular i found unlikeable, i think there was a certain lack of storytelling flair i would expect from the author. i also think this is a little too reminiscent of addie larue but that's my own thing that i keep complaining about in Schwab's books, yet ignore every time.

as it is, toxic lesbian vampires is exactly what you get, just don't forget that those undead peeps are old and live through a lot of shit
