A tale of vampires--centers around Mariá (Sabine), Charlotte, and Alice. Super intriguing; had me hooked. Loved V.E. Schwab's prose and how it really sinks you into the setting. I thought that the lore of the vampires was also very interesting, particularly their magical capabilities (being able to claim possession of a place, mind-reading, etc.).

However, it definitely drudges up grey feelings that I would prefer not to experience again. Perhaps it's the constant discussion of how vampires needed to feed, but it was rather gruesome. A great read, though.

This book definitely leans towards the literary, even though it is probably categorized as “fantasy.” I thought it was a page-turner and beautifully interesting, but understand the reviewers finding it slow and/or repetitive if they were expecting more classic plot-forward fantasy.

This is my first VE Schwab book, and she has earned a fan in me! I didn’t know what to expect outside of “toxic lesbian vampires”, and while it defffffinitely delivered on that front, I didn’t realize it would also be a study in humanity and what it means to feel alive. The overview says it’s a story about hunger, love, and rage, and it really explores those themes in so many different ways, all while layering this into a story about vampires. I think I may have been intimidated by how she writes, but it’s so intimate and atmospheric (but not overdone) and touches on things relatable to every one.
The only issue I had was the pacing, it was a slow start, but I enjoyed the character studies and how your view of these characters change throughout the book. Also, it made me want to travel with my partner and see the world.
