Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America by Ibram X. Kendi

The book just moves inexorably, brutally through history. Every word packs a punch, and there was really no place to slow down at all. At certain points I lost track of the through line and I feel like it might have been a little more effective with a less broad thesis.
Graphic: Racism, Murder, Slavery, and Sexual violence
Moderate: Rape

Very informative history of racist ideas in the US from 17th century to 2016

This was often a hard book to read, both because it made me angry and because it made me take a long, hard look at myself - and I didn't always like what I saw. This book helps the reader more critically examine US history. Kendi has written a powerful book and I highly recommend it.

Effort required but worth it.

This book is a tome, and it's work to get through but it was well worth it. I appreciate how Dr. Kendi gave us the "narrators" to focus on as the US went from its infancy to near the present day.
The audiobook is well narrated by Christopher Dontrell Piper.

Very lengthy and deep read. I learned a lot about our country’s history with racism and though it may have been culturally acceptable back then, it is not anymore! Time to heal wounds and move forward together.

I made it through my first history book and I’m so glad it was this one! Although I probably won’t remember all the details of this long and sometimes dense book, I know that the big ideas will stick with me for a long time to come. I learned so much while reading and I feel compelled to keep reading and learning too.
It will make you so angry and sad at many points but will also leave you with a sense that we can have a more equal and just future if we keep fighting for it. This is a must read for anyone wanting to learn about the origins and development of racist ideas in America and where to go from here.
