I don't ever remember reading this as a child, and that fact makes me a little sad. This is the glorious tale of a girl who sets out to save her prince and realizes that she doesn't actually need that prince. This is a tale that every girl needs to read at least once.

Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC.

Elizabeth is a beautiful princess with beautful clothes engaged to be married to a prince. One day a dragon comes along and burns up her palace and clothes and takes Ronald away! Eliabeth decides to go after him, but the only thing to wear that wasn't burned is a paper bag. She puts it on and goes off in search of her prince. She finds the dragon easily enough and outwits the dragon to save Ronald. But Ronald is stunned and embarassed by her appearance; despite the fact that she just saved him from being eaten. Elizabeth now has to make a choice: marry her ungrateful prince, or be happy on her own.

Great feminist children's book. I've been wanting to read this for a while because I've heard such great things about it. And they were all correct!! I want to give a copy to every little girl I know. One of my favorite children's books ever.

So, I just re-read this book which I have not read it since I was about 8. I forgot how abrupt that ending was and I love it even more now that I'm older. I think it leads to a great discussion with young girls that boys can be total jerks...but also that girls are able to be smart, strong and free to do as they please with their life.

Excellent plucky female protagonist! Perfect for my 3-5 year old creative drama class. Love the illustrations as well.

This is a lovely feminist fairy tale with a kick-ass princess taking the lead. The prince is useless and a total jerk, and the dragon is arrogant and needs to be thwarted. It's a lovely book about using your smarts to succeed, and I would definitely recommend this one. I could see the book being a little long for some readers, but I didn't mind.

For: readers looking for a feminist princess picture book or a fairy tale with an unexpected plot.

Possible red flags: some may find the book too controversial.

There's a number of great Munsch books and this might be the greatest. The message is right on point.

Elizabeth is a beautiful princess, and is set to marry prince Ronald. One day a dragon came and destroyed her castle, burnt her clothes, and took her prince. Finding only a paper bag to wear, Elizabeth sets off to follow the dragon and get her prince back.
*SPOILERS AHEAD*

I love this book! It’s such a great story and the illustrations are amazing. I love that Elizabeth is strong, and when her “prince” turns out to be a dud she tells him and is ok with not marrying him. This gives little girls AND boys a great story to look to for advice, and to know how to handle future situations.

loudly feminist, celebrates women as ingenious superheros au courant with their worth who don't need saving but in lieu do the saving
