It's like if Nicolas Spark's The Best Of Me took its societal analysis further.
It's a very good book but there always felt something slightly beyond reach of me personally loving it and I'm not sure why.
Maybe it's the length of 21 hours. Maybe it's how the flawed main character is actually quite perfect in many ways(academically gifted, athletic jock, artistic, eventually grew up into wealth, righteous soul) . Maybe something else. Good as it is and deserving of the praise.
But the ending pissed me off because it didn't need to end ina romance between Angus and Demon but obviously it does. I get it. I get that's where it's going between setting up the players of Immy, and Dori, and Angus . But damn did it not need to be there. Lovely as I'm sure others will delight in it being a fitting cherry the end on.

This book made me think a lot about the narratives we tell ourselves about our lives, vs how we actually fit into others lives and how they see us. Demon was viewed so differently by his peers than he saw himself, both for better and for worse.
It also makes me think about the copperhead eating its own tail. Things always come full circle, we recreate and break cycles, blah blah blah
I’ll be chewing on this for a long time!
