3.5. Stars. Gosh I’m bummed because this started off so strong and was full of (albeit cliche) tropes that I love so much. Coming of age, chosen one, battle school, magic, young love! What more could you want! But it REALLY wandered around in the last 3rd. Too many bits and pieces that seemingly never went anywhere. I get that this is the first of a trilogy, and I expect those things get answered later but… I just don’t know if I care enough anymore to read them. The meandering and the jumping around of the timeline was just… strange. Anyway… a fun one. Wish it had finished as strong as it started.

Naprosto úžasný první díl této fantasy ságy. Sice jsem to četla hodně dlouho, ale opravdu se mi to líbilo. Více v recenzi.

MOJE RECENZE NA BLOGU

This was a great story! It was a dark coming of age fantasy story with a lot of action, qualities I love. I am excited to keep reading the Raven's Shadow books.

One of my favourite books this year! So great!

Ryan is a great story teller with such detailed descriptions. I loved this book as much as I loved 'book of the Ancestor' series.

One small thing that I couldn't agree was that the brothers who learn and fight are teenagers less than 15 years old. May be in that era they were capable of all that? What can I say, this is a story after all.
Am still standing by my 5 stars!

Pretty standard, albeit entertaining and enjoyable fantasy.

Really well written and exciting story, I can't wait to see where this goes!

I really liked this one! Great characters, strong world building, interesting plot. Can we just talk about how cool Vaelin is? He's like the ultimate normal-guy hero who also happens to have magic - although it takes a bit to get to that part. He was such a good leader and I loved how he just accepted his lot in life and made the most of it. He lived on his own terms, without blaming the world for the crappy stuff he goes through. It was so refreshing. And I love the juxtaposition between him being a killer and how nice and polite he is - it somehow made total sense and didn't at all feel like he was a psychopath, which is how a lot of people with that combo come off (people meaning characters - I don't think I actually know any killers in real life. Especially not polite ones).

And Frentis! Oh, cute Frentis. I thought it was adorable how the boys just adopted him as their little brother. All the brothers had such great relations - I really felt they came off as a family, all trying to make it through together.

And I won't tell you the ending here cuz that would be cruel, but holy cow it blew my mind. I didn't see that one coming at all! It made me want to reread the whole thing looking for clues, see if I can spot it now that I know what to look for. Not that you'd be able to do that in a first read, mind you - but I bet there's some foreshadowing in there I missed.

I can't wait for the second one to come out. And I love that I feel enough closure here about this one but still want to know what happens next. But the story is definitely all its own - you're not just getting a third of a story like you do in some trilogies. There's a good arc to it all.

Basically you should just go read this one, okay? And let the record show that Amazon recommended this one for me based on previous purchases, so I can hereby trust Amazon to find me good books. Which is great, cuz that's like gaining a new best friend. ;)

Slow burn, but great character development and plot. Good world building.
