This book started SO good. Yes, I could see lots of influences, but they were all organically introduced and worked.
I saw the influence of G.R.R. Martin and the Black Watch with the boys being gathered away from their homes. I could see Robin Hobb's influence with the wolf/dog as a compagnion.Learning the trade of a blacksmith, something that we get to see a little with Perrin in The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. Even a little bit of Harry Potter with magical school. All these things were fun to experience with Vaelen.
I love the beginning. the middle was boring, then three quarters through it got better, then it got worse towards the end.
It was like four different stories in one book. Four different styles of writing. Four different desires.
I am going to proceed to the sequel...and I'm hoping that it reconnects with the GOOD part of the story.
Vaelen is a great charcter, but it seemed like he got lost in the story for a while. It became a lot bigger and the part that he was in became less significant.

Really well written. It doesn't really do anything mind blowing in its fantasy subgenre of medieval Europe dress up, but even when it was at its most predictable it was still highly enjoyable.
I saw this book everywhere in my city's bookstores and on posters and so on and i won't lie but it really took my attention by the cover. I just finished Martin's ASOIAF and needed some more proper fantasy and then this book appeared in my life and i must tell...i am completely in love with Anthony Ryan's writing style and his mind.
Raven's shadow took me to completely new world that i totally loved. From characters to the storytelling the book was awesome. I can't wait to read more books from Anthony Ryan's world!

My second time reading this. I hope that when I read the sequel right after finishing this one, it may be better than when I had read it last time...I didn't like the sequel in comparison with this amazing piece of literature
This book is marinated with action... mmmm tastes good!
Really, this is such an exciting and nicely paced novel. Love the writing, love the characters, and love that there are more in this serious out there. Excellent job ~

Možná nejlepší prvotina kterou jsem kdy četl. Příběh mě okamžitě vtáhl svým chronologickýxh stylem vyprávění pod dětských let po drsnou dospělost.
Postavy mě bavily a samotný svět mi přišel zajímavý

This was recommended by a booktuber as an alternative to 'Name of the Wind'. I had the good fortune to find at the library, so I picked it up.
The way time skips and flash forwards were handled was enjoyable. You know from the start what direction the book is taking and more or less what happens at the end while leaving the outcome unclear. It was enjoyable filling in the blanks as you go along.

Enjoyed this little diddy. Only issue was that almost everything V did was pointless in the end.
