The Tenant is the first book in the Korner and Werner series by Katrine Engberg. I came across it during my search for Nordic mysteries.

A woman is found murdered in an apartment building and Korner and Werner are assigned to the case. It is discovered that the landlady of the building is part of a novelist group that shares stories they are in the process of writing. And, as it turns out, the murder seems to be based on one of her stories.

For some reason, I had a very hard time getting interested in the story. I felt that it was going way too slowly and I really didn’t like the characters. It took about a third of the way in to finally enjoy the book.

I think this is a series I’ll continue reading. Even though Korner and Werner don’t seem likable to me, maybe that will change in the next book.

Thriller set in Copenhagen, which I enjoyed, because I have been to this beautiful city, and some of the landmarks were familiar to me. I thought the storyline was interesting, but I am not sure that the lines of the story were clean - perhaps it had to do with the translation into English.
The Tenant is about a young girl, Julie, who is murdered in her apartment. She is the tenant in a 3 story building. Esther is the landlord, and a writer. Strangely enough, Esther has begun to write a book detailing a murder of a young woman, which is modeled on Julie.
More sinister things happen, and Jeppe and Anette, the investigators on the case, keep uncovering more and more strange situations. They have multiple suspects, and try to zero in on the murderer.
Meanwhile, Jeppe has not fully recovered from his split with his wife, and isn't emotionally stable, plus he is taking OxyContin for his "back issues".
When they discover who the murderer is, and why he killed, Jeppe and Anette are in a race to save those that they can.

Plot kept me captivated. Writing and characters were lacking in some places but so much potential especially little tidbits

I received a copy of this story from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

A mystery thriller that is neither mysterious nor thrilling? Doesn't sound like a good time to me.

I struggled a lot with this one. The many PoVs don't seem to serve any more purpose than to make the story chaotic. It's hard to connect with the characters because the writing (or the translation) was very flat. And at the same time, all the characters seemed a little judge-y? It was a weird vibe.

The mystery was fairly easy to figure out. I considered the merits of a few red herrings but pretty much knew who it was from the beginning. The motives are unnecessarily convoluted and the ending doesn't really leave you with a feeling of resolution.

I can't see myself recommending this to anyone, unfortunately.

This is a perfect crime mystery. Nordic noir is new for me but I’m loving it. This is the first in a series and I’m very excited for the next book. The details into police work and even the little nods to theatre that are all correct made me so happy.

I definitely recommend this book and I’m so excited to read more by Katrine Engberg!

Scandinavian noir. I mostly liked it but felt like maybe I was missing something in the translation. It moved quickly compared to many of the the non fiction books I’m reading, but a little slowly for a mystery thriller.

I really enjoyed this debut novel by Katrine Engberg. The police in it kind of reminded me of The Killing" TV show; which is an adaptation of a Danish TV series. The TV series was created from the book by the same name written by David Hewson.

This book was so good that I did not try to figure out the mystery and who the killer was. Ok, maybe for a brief moment I did. Yet, the storyline was well played out that I could not solve the clues. So, instead I just sat back and enjoyed reading this book.

Ms. Engberg makes a name for herself with The Tenant. I was drawn to this book due to the cast of characters and the well thought out twisted and suspenseful storyline. Warning: Once you start this book you will not want to put it down!
