What a delightful novel! A classic in my family, I somehow missed out on reading this as a kid. However, it proved compelling and inspiring as a young adult, too! I read this as my fun novel during winter semester, and it was a nice combo of easy-to-read but also compelling. I found the themes to be inspiring and the characters to be well-developed. 10/10 would give to my kids (and peers) to read.

I read this with my 12 year old. Fun read and even more fun to watch her be inspired the story, and especially the main character, Meg.

Hmm... 3,5 bintang. Terus masih bingung mau ngebuletin ratingnya ke atas apa ke bawah (....)

Waktu baca buku ini aku malah kebayang-bayang sama banyak buku lain. Terjemahan "the dark thing" di sini jadi "materi gelap" bikin keinget His Dark Materials, sci-fi-nya bikin keinget Interworld. Gimana cara Meg ngalahin ITU bikin keinget Harry Potter, terus setelah gugling sana-sini gimana Madelaine L'Engle menyisipkan sejumlah alusi Kristiani ke dalam ceritanya mirip Narnia. Terus apa lagi ya.

Oh, tesseract-nya bikin keinget The Avengers =))

Ceritanya sendiri bagus sih, suka sama konsep menjelajah dimensi kelimanya. Suka sama tokoh-tokohnya terutama Meg.

Boo. :|

update: akhirnya ngasih rating 4 bintang deh, i can relate to Meg, ahahah.

Unfortunately, I did not enjoy this book, although it is considered a classic.

I couldn't connect to the characters and the story. Everything seemed rather distanced, the plot a bit stretched out, characters not developed, the dialogues boring. There was a very black-and-white story between good and evil, and we don't even get to know what these good and evil are exactly - yeah, yeah, love is all you need.

I understand that this is a book for adolescents, so maybe I would have enjoyed it a bit more if I read it earlier. In that sense, maybe the idea of tesseract or of the uniform and controlled society as well as free will could be interesting to discuss with kids.

In terms of a "strong female character", unfortunately, I didn't see Meg as such. Yeah, she is misunderstood etc, her mom is a strong scientist woman, yet beyond the first couple of pages she was just scared and whiney all the time.

First time reading this icon….tried to read a paper copy early in elementary school and got confused because this book is all over the place lol. Still feel like it’s all over the place but it’s literally a kids book so idc lmao. 3/5 stars because I wasn’t too moved or into it but can definitely see why some people enjoy it!
