Funny, clever and sad. I suggest re-reading the opening chapter of the book after you finish to really close the loop.

This was on the shelf in the flat I am subleasing. I didn't expect something great, but that is what I found. Engaging, interesting story. There are glimmers of truth, which I think make it that much more compelling.

I’ve been waiting to read this book for a year after picking it as my book club pick for 2020. The high ratings, the description of friendship through unspeakable horror, and the unique mission of finding a dozen eggs led me to pick it.

And??...it was a complete miss for me. I just didn’t appreciate the crude humor or all the savage death. Yes, I knew it was a WWII book but the praise of it being a great mix of humor & thriller didn’t come true for me.

I’m clearly in the minority here so time for me to move on to the next read.

City of Thieves was very enjoyable. It was predictable, but in a way I didn’t mind. It hit the right beats for me. It was funny and sad and overall an unexpected palate cleanser after reading more serious books.

3.5

Brilliant story, well-written, fast-paced, and possibly one of the only stories set during a war that I've enjoyed. I'm not a fan of historical war fiction, but I saw this in a second hand bookshop and I was a fan of the authors work on Game of Thrones (might as well be honest, lol) so this was why I picked up this book and I'm glad I did.

Lev and Kolya (loved him!) were two young Russian lads thrown together at the height of the war to carry out a single errand for a colonel; find a dozen eggs.

Through incredible hunger, snow covered forests, and the threat of German soldiers, Kolya's wit and charisma is a force stronger than defeat. Cannibals, a rooster, a chess game, and Vika, the best sniper in all of Russia, all meet in this dark yet humorous story. I'd be keen to read another by this author.
