Fallen Skies is a brilliant novel that gives the reader a glimpse into post-war England in the 1920s and how society and class was forever changed, a dark look into the horrors faced by living soldiers after WWI, and melds them into the story of a woman with a love for life and a very strong will. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys English period novels or appreciates Philippa Gregory's work in general.

amazing book. Quite different than her other books. WWI shellshocked victim and a 1920s flapper who loses her mother and enters the world of upperclass family denial.

I seem to find all of Philippa Gregory's books completely engrossing and disturbing at the same time. The characters are almost universally unlikeable, and yet understandable and pitiable, which keeps me reading. I wouldn't want to read this again, though.

Ok was not expecting that ending but I guess on one hand it had to end that way. The book starts kind of slow for me but then her husband goes so crazy you can't stop reading about the train wreck that is his mind. He definitely had some PTSD and was in denial about it. Oh Coventry you sly dog even though you were so very loyal to your master I still love your character! I enjoyed it, not as much as her others but that ending makes it worth reading I think...

It is amazing to me how Philippa Gregory's work can vary from absolute rubbish to bordering on brilliance. Her Tudor series in itself does this. Her newest book, The Other Queen, was shoddily written, redundant, and dull. But Fallen Skies, which she wrote 15 years ago, was the complete opposite. It started off very slowly, as many character-driven books can. All of the characters are superbly and realistically drawn. Sometimes they are loathsome, sometimes pitiable. A lot of the book's "action" takes place within the hearts and minds of the characters and doesn't manifest itself in "real" action until the last 100 pages. Gregory paints a haunting portrait of 1920s England, the horrible lasting effects of the Great War, and the realities of domestic warfare and the subjugation of women. If you don't like slow-paced, character-centered books then this isn't the Gregory for you, but I thought it was a great read.

3.5 stars. Somewhat repetitive but there may be a poetic point to it that I am not smart enough to grasp. 1 star off for wrapping up neatly in last 2 pages. Hate that.

I definately like her Tudor's series much better but I did not think this book was terrible. The characters may not be "likable" but if they were the story would not work the same. I would say that it was a bit long and therefore made it drag out in some parts.
