75% of it is horribly unsettling. It’s weird and dark and the characters aren’t likable and incredibly problematic. But I think that’s the point of fairytales - they’re dark and ugly like life sometimes.
The execution of this book is insane though. It’s irrefutable that Ava is an incredible writer and she makes you feel every last bit confused, disgusted, uncomfortable and shocked. It’s also written like a fairytale, which I feel like has thrown some readers expecting a more modern fantasy geared story, this ain’t it. But Ava still does it in a way that feels interesting and not drab and I think she very artfully retold the story in a way that is more understandable for modern audiences while having that fairytale feel.
I appreciated the light at the end of the tunnel that was the ending. It is still a “happy ending”, but was woven into the rest of the story in a way that felt right and not cheesy but also didn’t make me want to die the same way a super gruesome horror ending would.
I would go into this with the mindset that this book isn’t to be enjoyed, sort of reminiscent of the Portrait of Dorian Gray. If you enjoyed it the way you would a modern fantasy, you’re either twisted or missed the point entirely.

the lack of character exploration highlighted a plot that wasn't paced very well; it didn't feel like much happened until the last 40 pages and the ending felt rushed.
I was shocked to see the writing style praised in other reviews. ava reid undoubtably did describe the atmosphere, but having 3-6 similes on each page (I wish I was exaggerating) made them obvious and ineffective. I will say some were absolutely stunning!!!! but they drowned in a sea of the unnecessary, like a sailor haphazardly thrown overboard. I typically love atmospheric, moody, flowery prose and gothic fairy tale retellings so I was disappointed that this book did not live up to a single expectation I had for it.
one more thing: if you read ACOTAR and were tired of SJM's repetitiveness of someone making "a vulgar gesture" you should stay far away from this book. if I had a dollar for every time this whiny b*tch "felt bile rise in her throat" or for every mention of blood or teeth I could purchase a book (or 6) that would actually deliver on its promises. body horror works well for me when it’s shocking/unexpected; overuse of several elements made for ineffective writing.
reading this has desensitized me to blood and guts and similes. I think I maybe get why someone could like it? but if you did I cannot relate less. hate to give a book a 1-star review; thought about DNFing around 45 pages & definitely should've.

Similarly to The Wolf and the Woodsman, I was convinced the book was going to end tragically. I suppose it did, in a way. I’m really relieved it wasn’t a sad ending, but another part of me wonders if it should’ve been sad… but I’m gonna say no because I emotionally wouldn’t have been able to handle that

I didn’t know half of the time if anything was real or we just had an unreliable narrator and that kept me very interested.
Very gory though. Do not go into it without looking at the trigger warnings
