Thomas Capano was a member of the Democratic party, and a member of a prominent family in Delaware. He became a lawyer, where he worked at Saul Ewing LLP. While there, he became involved in an affair with Anne Marie Fahey, the appointments secretary for Governor Tom Carper. Fahey was also involved in a relationship with another man. The last time Fahey was seen alive was when she went out to dinner with Capano, making him the prime suspect in her disappearance. Capano was arrested and charged with the murder of Anne Marie Fahey.

I have a couple of takeaways from this book. While we all know which political party is worse in regards to human rights, this goes to show you that no political party is perfect and creeps exist in all parties. (I must remind everyone that I hate political parties in general.) People often think that someone from a good family, with a good job, with fame/fortune, would never do anything like this. People cheat on their spouses all the time, people feel entitled to things they cannot have or do not deserve, and a lot of those types are the exact ones that people act shocked about when they get busted. You can never trust anyone, and the more crime books and shows you read, the more you should know that. It's scary and revolting.

Anyway, as far as this particular book goes, the research was well done. I had never heard of this case or these people, so I learned a great deal about that. I thought the writing was very engaging, and I had a hard time putting it down. I was interested in the legal processes that were outlined in this book. I think anyone who is interested in true crime, or just getting into it, should look through Ann Rule books and check them out. They are usually consistently well done.

Yuck....Tom Capano sure was an awful man. I think what makes it worse was that he HAD everything - a family, a great career but had to go an screw it up with numerous affairs and to manipulate and control these women. As much as I want to give this 4 stars I agree that there almost seemed to be too much information at times. This book also left me wondering about Capano's family - I would have loved to see some insight from Capano's ex wife Kay - What was going on in mind all those years? Did she know he has all these other girlfriends? This could really use an update as well, since it has been 15 years since the trial concluded, and I would love to know what some of these people are doing now.
3.5 stars.

This is my second Ann Rule book (the first was THE STRANGER BESIDE ME) and I loved it. Capano, the real-life villain of this piece, wasn't (that we know of) a serial killer like Ted Bundy, but he was terrifying in his own way. I had a stalker when I was in high school--someone I had never encouraged and had no entanglements with--and it was terrifying, so I can't imagine how much worse it must have been for Anne Marie Fahey to realize that the person she loved was truly a monster, and trying to disentangle herself, and then paying the ultimate cost for it. And how Capano just GOT AWAY WITH IT for so long, and how it all could have been prevented if anyone had listened to Capano's previous girlfriend's complaints about him, just makes it all worse. Rule has SO MUCH detail on this case, though my edition is somewhat old and I did have to look up what happened to Capano after the case. It's all almost too much to believe, but this is a frightening reality many women live with and I think an important look at how much stalking and relationship violence can begin seemingly innocuously, with gifts and sweet words, and escalates to isolation and manipulation and control, and then slide straight into violence and even straight-up murder.

while i've never read a true crime book before, i don't think i like this type of book. there was way too much detail and it took forever to actually get into the story line. the first part of the book describe the characters ancestors. i don't see a point in reading about a person's grandparents, it didn't matter in the plot. as much as i wanted to put this book down, i didn't because i wanted to see what happened in the end.

This book shows how the human kind can be manipulative and horrible. I wasn't a fan of the first 15% of the book but after the first part was over it was very good. Ann Rule really knows how to tell a story!
