turgenev has such an understanding of human emotion, it really warms my heart every time. so much compassion in his writings and the characters he creates. of course this book hits home in some ways because I'M the college kid with big ideas coming to a home with sentimental parents, always feeling a bit out of place...just a really lovely read.

I could see this being an entry point for people that want to get into nineteenth-century Russian literature. It's short and quippy and full of life. It's all about generational gaps and love (whether someone is overly filled with love or can't seem to experience it whatsoever) and philosophy in the face of sentimentality and sentimentality in the face of rebellion.

You know it's good whenever a Russian novel incorporates an inopportune duel caused by idiotic circumstances.
