Feels really modern given when it was written. It's easily readable and the characters feel like real people. I like that we spend a bit of time with each character getting to know their backstory and view of the world. The way Mr Nihilist Bazarov says everything is stupid and his parents who haven't been visited in 3 years are just happy to hear him talk. Or the way Mr Idealist Arkady dreamily develops a crush on Ms Cool Cat Odintsova. An unexpectedly sweet read.

i could already see the layers he was putting together and the symbolism/messages/parallels but the translation of the version i have was really dry and read like dickens so i put it aside

The "new man" is one of the best characterizations I've seen and truly timeless. Also interesting to circle back to this book, as it's influence on at least Dostoevsky is front and center (I think Hem also admitted heavy inspiration, which makes sense though I'd have thought it was unlikely)
[1862] My Everyman's Library edition translates the title as Fathers and Children. (notes to self…) My first 5-star read of 2022! True, it’s about fathers and sons but it’s also about the women in their lives. Fully actualized women with thoughts and lives of their own at that. I love it when narrators insert themselves a little bit, as does our narrator here. I found this warmer than other Russian literature that I’ve read. Felt contemporary.
