I reallyyy do not know what to think of this book which is deeply unhelpful bc I have to write an essay about it lmao
I think it is very useful as historical storytelling and as an Indigenous novel but the actual story beats/plot fell short of being completely interesting. Maybe it's the complete lack of understanding of how/why/what marrow harvesting is really doing (I fear my worldbuilding brain needs to know) & also the jumping of time and space & lack of characterization of like. anybody tbh ? maybe it's just Frenchie's voice but. did not feel like I understood anybody in this book, not even Frenchie himself. Maybe I'm being unfair to the 16 year old boy POV though lmao. The message and the stories are loud and clear and it does its job well for that purpose though. This is about hope and family.
yeah okay I have to go think about this for a few days before I actually try to write about it because ???

edit: now that i have actually rwitten my essay (mostly lol it's due in an hour and i am not quite done), this is obviously an extended metaphor and writing it away as SFF does it a massive discredit bc it's not genre-conforming it's a story of stories and of survivance and a warning of just how easy it is to repeat the past. yeah frenchie and the other characters aren't entirely developed and the worldbuilding is not really all there and it's just running and whatever but that's not the point ¿ the point is that It Can Happen Again and survivance is more than survival it is resisting victimhood. im also not indigenous so i can't exactly talk on this but once the problem of genre strikes again. NOT a YASFF book just for fun.
