Reli para poder escolher um conto sobre o qual escrever um artigo. Mas será uma decisão difícil, pois não faltam estórias magistrais nessa coletânea. Certo, nem todos entram nessa categoria, alguns são bem esquecíveis, mas é o mal de todo livro desse tipo. Ainda mais um que junte tantas narrativas assim. Não muda o fato, no entanto, que esse é um livro que merecia muito mais atenção do que recebe, mesmo tendo sido um tanto popular quando foi lançado por aqui. Petruchevskaya é a mais pura descendente de Edgar Allan Poe que consigo ver hoje em dia. Muitos dos que se inspiram no autor acabam indo para um campo do weird, enquanto a natureza de narrativas orais que transpira pelos contos reunidos aqui trazem aquela característica atemporal dos grandes clássicos. A autora é mais sensível, é verdade. A sua posição é uma de objetificar muito menos a morte de belas jovens, e acaba colocando muitas vezes o amor materno no centro das suas histórias, que conseguem unir crueldade com finais muitas vezes passíveis de serem chamados de felizes. Também transpira em sua prosa a história da URSS. As diferenças culturais são tangíveis, e, no entanto, nos parecem naturais, talvez pelo contexto em que são colocadas. Petruchevskaya consegue nos transportar no tempo e no espaço sem parecer forçada ou didática. Ela é uma das grandes contadoras de estórias do nosso tempo. Eu com certeza recomendo esse livro ante a sua autobiografia que também foi lançada por aqui. Pena que são essas as duas únicas obras que temos em português, até onde sei.

Just recently started getting into short stories. These are dark and creepy and I really loved some of them. Writing style is a little bit strange, not sure if it’s in the translation but it does add to the eeriness of the stories.

These stories reminded me very much of the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books that I loved as a kid. Not exactly scary, but with a little twist at the end that might seem... spooky.
I enjoyed most of the stories, and I enjoyed the stories themselves, my only hang up was the writing. I think it was mostly that something may have gotten "lost in translation"... strange bits thrown in to weird places, things told out of order, random facts thrown in where unnecessary, kind of sloppily written in some cases. But since these were translated stories, I can only assume that is the reason for the muddiness of the writing. They also read more like stories that would be told out loud, like spoken word but written down word for word.
Other than the sometimes muddled writing, I enjoyed the book overall, but I'm not sure I would read it again.
