Sorry. I tried to like this book. I really did. It had such an interesting premise! And one of my friend's kept raving about it! However, I just could not enjoy it. My main problem, and this is a HUGE one, is the insta-love/love triangle. There was no reason other than "wow! you're hot!" for the so-called love and the so-called relationships were manipulative and borderline abusive. So, not cool. My other problem is that the main character (Ten), started off with such promise. I loved the idea that she was willing to put up w/ abuse and imprisonment just to keep from being forced to make a choice. However, her reasons for not making a choice are never explained. As far as I can tell, it comes down to teenagey "you can't make me" rather than any real, interesting reasons. She very quickly morphed from a potentially interesting and powerful character into a whiny, bratty teenager who falls in love with the first hot boy who crosses her path. Nothing to recommend here.
Garbage. Too much lovey garbage that is unrealistic and too heteronormative. Terrible terrible cliffhanger awful ending. And I just am sad that everyone didn't die. There was promise with friendship, but Showalter really dropped the ball.
I haven't finished it yet, but so many things make me angry that I just have to write something. Words such as "Fuck you," "Get over yourself" and "stop thinking with your vagina you weak ass bitch" come to mind when looking at the pages of this book. Tenley, the supposed bad ass crazy girl, is not crazy at all, she never does anything crazy except obsess over numbers. And she is all high and mighty saying she would never let lust lead her decisions but that's been her only driving factor I swear to god! And then the other, oh I care about people! is slapped on the pages as an after thought to make her some sort of better person. But it's hard to make someone a character when they literally have no consistent personality. And I don't know why she is portrayed as so strong and different "from other girls" (stand back I'm gonna vomit) because she doesn't stand for whats right as long as what is arguing her isn't some 6 ft muscled Greek God. Which is what Archer and Killian are supposed to be. I am so offended that a "strong" female character is immediately swayed by a man just by his good looks an supposed smooth flirting. Literally everything Killian says is insulting to women! And Ten is just all, Oh mY GoD DoES hE LikE mE. STOP THINKING WITH YOUR PUSSY AND HAVE SOME DIGNITY BITCH! If they sent someone ugly she wouldn't even give them a second thought I bet. And this is a side note but gets me every time, no WAY would someone be allowed to disrespect authority the way Archer and Killian do. No way. And their snark emails is just to show how funny they are, honestly they just come off as assholes. However I will say Killian is a constant character but Archer is a hot mess. And Clay? Who was that again? Exactly. Such a flat character. I'll probably be back to write more. Well I'm done and I don't think I can be bothered to write more, just that every other bad review probably sums up how I felt. Glad it's over
