Overall, this was a fair read. I think I was not quite in the right mood to read it, though it won't stop me from reading the next book. I did feel that I didn't quite feel for the main character, even if her love interest interested me as a character - just not for her, if that makes sense?

Alright, so short review:

Plot: Generic, with a lot of twists that didn't strike me emotionally, but merely seemed to be included to fuel the drama. Certain deaths occured, but they didn't provide any emotional response from me unfortunately.

World: I actually liked the idea of the world. I think it's very imaginative, a new take on the whole hell (Myriad) vs. heaven (Troika) for the afterlife. But I think the delivery was very bang bang, bang and while I normally liked being thrown into a world, I was exceptionally confused this time. Maybe it was because I didn't like Tenley much.

Characters: I particularly have no opinion of Tenley. Probably more close to saying I dislike her a bit but hat might be because I could not relate to her at all, and couldn't sympathise with her feelings. They came across as a bit false to me, even her curiosity and eventual love for badboy Killian. I liked Killian! He sounded complex, same with Archer. But their development with Tenley was a bit uninspired.

Romance: It's a very typical kind of romance. You have Ten who is of course attracted to the Myriad Labourer. Aka, bad boy. Normally I'd be a sucker for this kind of pairing because who doesn't love a complex loving bad boy as a side of guilty pleasure reading? But this time I just couldn't stop myself rolling my eyes. Loved Killian. But didn't like Tenley & Killian together even if I was half cheering to see them together since well, how else would I get to see Killian? On the side, it would seem like Archer would be the third part of the typical love triangle, but that never comes to fruition and Archer never seems like a threat, instead he's more of a very supportive third person?

Writing: Typical Gena Showalter.

Overall: Concept was interesting enough for me to read the next book, same as Killian, but overall, I probably read it again since this was a pretty average read for me that makes me yearn for beautiful writing and more meaningful, complex plots. I love Gena Showalter's Lord of the Underworld series - it's my THE guilty pleasure read - but I can't say the same for Firstlife. It's not a bad book! It just didn't hit me at the right time!

This book left me conflicted..... on one hand I could not put it down which usually is a good thing. on the other I am not sure if I actually enjoyed it.....I think this could be a story that needs time to think and absorb it...I'll let you now in a day or two lol

Interesting concept, but not executed well.

Bruh...dont do this to me!!

!! fun reread of a book i enjoyed when i was younger.

definitely not as good as i thought it was before but the world building is so interesting

This book was so hard to get through. Although the story was a good concept I thought it was poorly executed. I DNF but read the last chapter for a bit of closure.
mysterious

The premise of the book was interesting, but the plot was really messy. Half of the time I didnt understand what was going on, but I still wanted to read the book to find out how it ends. Wont be reading the other parts of this series.
