The cat is hungry now.

You will like Volume 2 if you enjoyed Volume 1. The nine storylines (or nine characters?) begin to intertwine as we become more familiar with their world. We learn more about the relationship between Xanther and her cat. My favorite sections were Xanther, Ozgur, and jingjing.

MZD compares The Familiar to a TV show (with five volumes equaling a full season). Into the Forest feels like the second half of a pilot. I am immensely excited for Honeysuckle & Pain (isn’t that a great title?).

I could not appreciate this book at all; I got so tired of the pretentious challenge of it. Done with the series.

Book 2, won't make much sense without reading one first. This book probably ought to come with a warning label, and some kind of brace. It's both physically and textually dense--text that's sideways or has cutouts or even stranger orientations, nine different narrator/focuses, and some sections that are heavily dotted with jargon or another language. You get some translations, but mostly you're expected to sift out meaning through context.

The nine different voices are color coded at the top right edge, and have different fonts and radically different writing styles--but they're beginning to draw together, tightening around twelve-year-old Xanther, who is somehow connected to something very large and strange.

It's pretty impossible to explain the plot, but there are layers of conspiracy--people working towards their goals, people working against them, lies and hunters, killers and attempted saviors. There's still hints that raise questions, but the shape of the mystery is becoming a little clearer.

Okay. Everybody. Stop what you're doing right now and go read this! The Familiar is by far the most intriguing, mind-bending, multi-layered reading experience I've had in years, brimfull of puzzles, mysteries, action and cultural references. A book like a top TV-series that will keep you thinking and puzzling all day...

glad i gave this series a second chance. Now, we start to see progression and the interconnectedness of plot and characters between the drugs, the orb/sorcerer and Anwar, and Xanther and the cat there is a lot going on. The characters are actually becoming engendering and relatable. Can't wait for Vol 3

So freaking exciting how everything is slowly starting to connect. There are some beautiful and some harrowing moments. And some bits that are opaque and impenetrable in the best possible way. This writer is in an advanced level of brilliance.

It seems too soon to properly review this, although it remains intriguing.

Remember finishing the first book in this series and thinking I was really invested in the storylines. Maybe it’s the time I waited until finishing the second book or maybe this sophomore effort just wasn’t as good, but I found myself just pushing to finish the book and finding myself no longer invested or interested in all but one or two storylines. I’ll probably continue the series but I’m certainly in no hurry to do so.
