I've read my fair share of sad books but this is definitely one of the saddest yet. Brutal and tragic, but so beautifully written and powerful. Couldn't see through my tears at several points while reading.
This is one of those books that stay with you for a long time. I'm so glad I was able to read it.

This book has completely broken my heart. The most devastating heart-wrenching book I've ever read. This is by far the most I have ever cried at a book. Holy moly.
Betty is like A Little Life but without the sadism and exploitation from the author - I can just about cope with this level of gut stabbing grief because the book had so much heart and was so beautiful. You will feel the kind of utter destruction of grief that makes you think about your family, childhood, trauma, and death (all the best topics), in such a complex way.
Brb just texting my therapist.

Stunning prose -I've never saved so many quotes from one book. Every page is gorgeous. Landon Carpenter has instantly become one my favorite literary fathers, a god to Betty and to me. McDaniel's The Summer That Melted everything was exceptional, and this follow up is phenomenal and worth the wait.
