For a group of people that are trying to save the public from a serial killer, they do not seem very concerned about actually informing the public about what is going on and it kind of drove me nuts.
That being said, the character of Wren I did fine to be a little bit too much. She would go off on these weird thought processes and that would have nothing to do with the case and then all of a sudden she was back on the case like it was the most important thing in the world.
it was very weird that she got so caught up in this game of cat and mouse with this serial killer. To the point where you're kind of just hoping she walks away and lets somebody else take over because clearly she cannot think straight.
And then you have the butcher. I will admit it was kind of interesting to read his chapters because it goes from this very normal seeming person to the most messed up inner monologue you could possibly think of which is to be expected in the mind of a serial killer.
I do know that there is a second living in a series, but I don't know that I would ever read it because I'm just not invested in something that's supposed to be so high stakes.

Trash.
Graphic scenes for shock-value only, poor writing.

Meh. Good not great. The good was the idea- this could have been an amazing story. It just needed some serious deepness. And the writing- when people talk, they don’t use contractions. What the frack is that. I dunno. I wanted to love this but I just didn’t. It reminded me a lot of Unsub by Meg Gardiner which was also a not so well written good story that could have been better. I don’t know. I still love the podcast with all the heart eyes. I just don’t know why she didn’t get an editor. Or a ghost writer. #engelbrechtreads2024 #engelbrechtreads

This was kind of a flop for me. I’m a fan of the Morbid podcast and I thought I’d like getting first hand perspective from the medical examiner herself but it was almost too clinical. The writing style was weird and clunky and just felt off.
This book was broken into two parts and while I really appreciate the twist, the second half felt like an entirely new person had written it. The first half was boring and tedious and the second had too much going on.
Maybe it was just me and maybe I’d like the rest of the series if she continues with it but I’m not sure there was anything I liked enough about this one to read the next.
